Before Christ transformed my life I was snobby and cocky. After Christ changed me (2nd Corinthians 5:17) I started treating everyone with kindness and compassion. The thing is, I almost feel like I now talk to much. I feel like I am over friendly and over talkative. I am thinking about keeping to myself more, but I do not want to be snobby.

Here's a good definition that I found on the internet. (I was having trouble putting it into my own words.)

"A snob is someone who is arrogant, but their arrogance is annoying."

"They patronize and rebuff and judge and ignore and cruelly mock people whom they consider social inferiors.

And they blatantly imitate, fawningly admire, and vulgarly seek associations with those who they believe are social superiors."

I do believe that there is a wee bit of snobbery in all of us.

I think that's right. Especially people as handsome and intelligent as I am. We have to fight it all the time.

I don't think you are. Isolating yourself is not the best cure for talking too much.

Hold that tongue a bit more and you'll be fine.

They are really hard to define, but I can spot them a mile away. One of my problems is this type of person is an instant dislike for me. In fact, I go out of my way to let them know I do not like them.

You find them in all walks of life, church, work, etc. Some good examples are someone who has not darkened the doorway of a church for months or even years, then expects a welcome back party when they do decide to polk their nose through the door. At work it might be the guy that never stops talking and has always experienced something to a better degree than you. If I had been in -10 degree weather, he has been in -20. If I know a man without an arm, he knows one without either, on and on it goes.

I guess the best definition I can come up with is someone who walks into either your or a group of people's presence, and nonverbally has a look about him that says, "here I am, have you noticed me today?"

We are always talking about welcoming people into our church or helping those who are obviously less fortunate than us. I have never had a problem with either helping or making those people feel welcome. I have a really bad problem with arrogance, and see no redeeming quality in such a person.

This is something the Lord is working on me to change, and the reason I know this, is I meet snobs at an increasing pace as of late, and am put into situations that demands a kind word to them. However, that is not the solution. The problem will be solved when I can look at them like anyone else.

I believe there is a bible verse that admonishes believers for prayers of "thank you not making me like them". Yet there are a few folks on this very board who tout that attitude regularly, which is the height of Christian snobbery.

Christians are not better people just because they're saved. They should, however, strive to be better people, because of whom they believe in.

A person who has an exaggerated respect of himself. It aligns with pride and arrogance.

    Cheers,

For many years William Faulkner was the resident author at the University of Virginia. They used to tell this story about Faulkner.

Faulkner, "I like Virginians. They are snobs in the true sense of the word."

"What do you mean, in the true sense of the word," someone asked.

"When an American is in Europe and someone asks them, 'Where are you from?' everyone except a Virginian will said, 'I am from the United States or the States.' But a Virginian will say, 'I am from Virginia.' "

Is it snobby if you see the same people several times per day at work, so you do not speak to them everytime? Is snob the opposite of being over friendly?
