... As Christians we are large on taking note of the Ten Commandments that Moses brought down from his meeting with God and the Jewish believer includes the other 603 laws given to Moses by God. As Paul points out in the epistles, the Law is our teacher and most of just gloss right over that and never meditate on it.
... The Law, in it's entirety, reveals 613 different views of that little three letter word, sin. The short answer is that sin is disobedience to God but the long and proper answer is one that teacher and the preacher do not have time to teach on a Sunday Morning nor a Sunday Evening. The problem is that we have all been taught that the scriptures are worthy to be studied and taught (2Tim. 3:16) but the assembly halls of the Christian faith have filled up with members of the world and rather than to study to show themselves approved (2Tim. 2:15), they are Pew Whales, hoping to purchase some Fire Insurance ad there-by escape the Great White Throne Judgment.
... There really is not a good short answer for the question, "What is sin?" Like a fine cut stone, there are many facets to the answer.

    Galatians 5

1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

2 Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you.

3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law.

4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

5 For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness.

6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.

It clearly states right there, if you try to keep any of the 603 laws of Moses, you must keep them all. I could go on and on and on and on about this.

There are sins of omission and sins of commission.

Basically sin is anything short of the perfection will of God. Thus, if I do a good thing, but it is not the best thing, it is a sin.

    Sin is anything less than:

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Sin is more than disobedience to God - it springs from our sin nature; it is man's natural rebellion against God. Man is born in a state of sin due to the sin nature, even if he/she has not committed a sin, and born separated from God.

... Hmmm. Counting the Ten Commandments there are 613 but the I've never known anyone, including yours truly, that can keep just the ten. You seem to think I did but I have never advocated nor have I taught that anyone should attempt to live under the Law. If you'll go back ad read the OP, keeping context in mind, you'll discover that I teach the Law is the Teacher of what sin is and that it is important to the True Believer, it gives us the model that God laid out for us to seek after.
... A quick study of Christianity 101 will explain exactly what I mean. If you own a Bible, I assume everyone here does, you hold the course curriculum in your hand at least once each Sunday, I would hope. Opening the Bible to The letter to the Romans and if you'll begin with the first verse and prayer the study can be completed in a week or two, depending on how deeply you dig and how long you meditate on what you read. Before you finish you'll know that Paul, like Jesus, did not teach us to ignore the Law and just run around sinning so that we could have more and ever more grace.

    God bless,

    Hi Bill,

here are some scriptural "short answers" which define sin:

Romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

As I pointed out when saying you contradicted yourself, you seem to be upset with my teaching that we use the Mosaic Law as our teacher to understand sin and you state that it is more than disobedience and then go on to state that it is man's rebellion against God which means disobedience.

    webdog,
... You'll note that I did not argue with Hank, I do not ever argue against the scriptures and I'm not going to here. So is it you intent to say that the scriptures list by Hank and yourself negate what I have taught and that they abolish the Law that Jesus lived and died to uphold?
... A short study, prayer and meditation of Christianity 101, course curriculum, the Letter to the Romans, a.k.a. the Christian manifesto will teach that Paul, under the tutelage of Jesus (Galatians) taught that the New Testament truths could nt be known by man without the Teacher, The Law!

In Romans Paul states that he was shown how he sins through the law. But Christ set us free from the law of Moses because he fulfilled it with His perfect sacrifice on the cross, shedding His blood for the worlds sins.

The law was the schoolmaster that led to Christ.

    Matthew 5:17-18

17"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.

18"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

    John 19:30

30Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Thus ended the law of Moses and began the "law that is Christ"

    Ephesians 2:8-9

    8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

    Hi Bill,

No, we ought not to argue as this is a debate forum and we are brothers in Christ.

Indeed, the law reveals the sin of each one who attempts to keep it.

Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

As regenerated Christians infused with the love of God, we are dead to the law and alive to Christ:

Romans 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

The guiding principle in life for the Christian is a person, The Spirit of God and a state of being: Faith.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Galatians 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.

Galatians 3:12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

Galatians 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Those who claim Christ yet practice the works of the flesh as opposed to producing the fruit of the Spirit have deluded themselves.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we stray from the leading of the Spirit of God and are not chastised then in reality, we are none of His.

NKJV Hebrews 12:8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.

Personally, the Spirit of God has never led me into sin.
I do that on my own when I stray from His leading.

The Good Shepherd has left the ninety and nine and rescued me from my folly on more than one occasion.

So, Bill, to continue this debate, when you quote the Scripture (Galatians) that the Law is our tutor to bring us to Christ, do you see that Scripture as the Law being used by the Spirit to reprove/convict us of our sin and therefore drive us to seek the Savior or do you see it as the personal practice of the 613 mitzvouth of the Talmudic Law (previously mentioned) as a means to learn Christ?

    Or perhaps something else?

    Thanks
    HankD

Maybe I wasn't clear. I was saying that man is born in a state of rebellion against God. Man is born with a sin nature. He does not have to commit a sin to be sinful because we are born sin-tainted and with a natural rebellion against God in our nature.
