    Divine Right of Kings

    Romans 13:1-2
"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: The powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation."

In Canada we have an anthem "God Save the Queen". Queen Elizabeth II is our Head of State or Sovereign. However, I do not know if this is relevant to the common person.

In America you have no King or Queen. If you did, would you follow their authority or is there no Bible basis to a "Divine Right of Kings"?

I have many questions on this matter. I am curious for any responses or enlightenment in this area.

    Thank You.

Most American Christians would acknowledge that God directs elections just as he directs royal childbearing.

The old concept of "divine right of kings" was a myth conjured my men, who took advantage of a populus that was, at that time, very superstitious.

    John,

Hello. I never knew that. I thought that Kings had special authority over man and that they were chosen by God. You learn something new everyday. Thanks.

Hypothetically, all leaders are ordained by God, but that doesn't mean they're not chosen by men, nor does it mean that such an ordination prescribes to them any particular divine dispensation.

    Johnv,

Do you think in any way God chose King James to be a special instrument in bringing about the KJV translation?

Not any more than Queen Elizabeth was a special instrument of the Bishops Bible, or that William Tyndale was a special instrument of the Tyndale Bible.

    Hello John,

I see what you are saying. In a way, not only do you answer my question but also that relating to the KJVO.

In conclusion, royalty has no special relationship to God. The common man shares the same personal relationship. On Earth we follow authority, but figures that violate Biblical teachings we don't?

Secular governments arent setup with deference to biblical teaching, either way. Secular governments are setup by man as man chooses.

For the Christian, however, Scripture calls us to respect those in leadership authority. Having once run for a local city council seat, I can tell you that public office is a rather thankless and difficult job to take on.

The King or Queen of England is the human head of the Church of England. The archbishop is finally appointed by the Queen and the Prime Minister jointly. In theory this makes the UK a "Christian" nation, under God.

In Canada, the Queen is represented by an appointed Governor General, who speaks on her behalf, but also with her approval. Some government Bills must be signed into action by the Queen. She is essentially the "Queen of Canada".

If the government wishes to change, by election or resignation, it must be approved by the Governor General (the Queen's official representative). If our government failed, the Queen assumed her role over Canadian affairs, so we are never without a head of the country.

The royal head is obligated to believe in God. As a modern example, the former Prime Minister wanted to change to Roman Catholicism, but he had to resign office to do so. A Roman Catholic cannot be Prime Minister of the UK, but this is not a restriction in Canada.

    Cheers,

    Jim

A little off topic, but you're referring to Tony Blair. He converted to Catholicism after leaving office. His wife and children are already Catholic. This is a good thing, imo. Worshipping together makes the family stronger.
