    Hi all,

A shout out to all retired military vets. Did I sound like Obama? yukkkkk.

Anyway, I received my cost-of-living statement today, and I will be making $6 less than last year. I've been retired for 8 years now and this is the first time I've seen my retirement go down. I know it is based on the CPI and I really haven't looked at this to understand how it works. But at the surface it is a COLA and I truly don't see where anyone living in the USA saw a benefit in last years cost of living. DO I have a wrong perception of this?

Now I'm very afraid of the reduction in taxes withheld earlier this year by Obama. Will he now want this money back come tax time. Sure seems like the little guy is starting to get squeezed.

It is right and proper to reduce retirement payments based on the CPI. Benefit recipients should be subject to the same economy as working individuals.

Yes, congress should not be immune. On a sidenote, I got a wage freeze this year and I'm fine with it.

Their is a slight difference between a wage freeze and a reduction in pay.

Lets see if congress forsakes their pay raise this year.
(remember, by law, their raise is automatic unless, they vote it down.)

But there's a huge difference between wages and the OP, which is the payment of a retirement benefit. The OP complains of the payment of benefits going down, since it's tied to the cost of living. That's different than wages, which is tied to market value.

Actually I'm fine with my pay being tied to the CPI, but I don't see where they get their numbers. Do you think that it was less costly to live in 2009? I don't, I pay more for gas, insurance premiums went way up, groceries up, medical costs way up. I just doesn't add up to me.

It is tied to inflation. Inflation actually fell over thee year. That's as a whole, not consumer inflation. I'm with you, SolaSaint... everything I buy/pay for got more expensive.
