I'm sure the mother of the 9 year old boy did not want him going around saying "hell" all the time. He did not realize the Biblical meaning.

I would congratulate the boy for his obedience and move on.

After class, I would make every effort to contact the boy's parents and praise their son for his obedience, explaining the context. I'm guessing any involved parent would then take the opportunity to talk to their son again about words and their contexts.

It should be a win-win-win situation for everyone.

I'd love to have more students who showed the level of integrity of the boy you wrote about.

I blogged about dams not too long ago because we are studying ecosystems. We've had this discussion several times. It's ok to talk about a dam used to block the water but not ok to use it as profanity.

I suppose he could have used the standard euphamism:

"How can you escape the condemnation of ... ?".

    Heck.

The boy gets credit for not wanting to use inappropriate language. Usually, kids will use language, and then come up for an excuse as to why it's not inappropaite.

I'd probably preface it with saying "if it's in the bible, and you're reading it in class like we are, then it's okay to read outloud any word that's in it". That's probably a good way to teach kids contextual usage.

BTW, the word used here is "Gehennah", which is Hell as we understand it (the place/state of eternal suffering and punishment separated from God).

I too would commend the boy for obedience to his parents. I would not correct the teaching of his mom, but inform her later of the confusion. And probably use the word destruction or hades.

    Yes, indeed.
Hades is actually different than Gehenna. Hades referrs to Sheol, while Gehenna referrs to the place of damnation. Anyhoo, using a word substitution is probably not a bad idea, in this case, substituting the word Gehanna, and explaining what it is.

I was a 3rd-4th grade SUnday School teacher, and that age group is quite adept. They're fantastic at that age.

I once witnessed a beaver damming a river. I didn't know beavers could have such foul mouths!
