WASHINGTON -- After days of secret talks, Senate Democrats tentatively agreed Tuesday night to drop a full-blown government-run insurance option from sweeping health care legislation, several officials said, a concession to party moderates whose votes are critical to passage of President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.

In its place, officials said Democrats had tentatively settled on a private insurance arrangement to be supervised by the federal agency that oversees the system through which lawmakers purchase coverage, with the possibility of greater government involvement if needed to ensure consumers of sufficient choices in coverage.

Additionally, the emerging agreement calls for Medicare to be opened to uninsured Americans beginning at age 55, a significant expansion of the large government health care program that currently serves the 65-and-over population.

At a hastily called evening news conference in the Capitol, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., declined to provide details of what he described as a "broad agreement" between liberals and moderates on an issue that has plagued Democrats' efforts to pass health care legislation from the outset.

With it, he added with a smile, the end is in sight for passage of the legislation that Congress has labored over for months.

It's incrementalism towards a single payer scam.

At the same time that they are lowering the age for Medicare they are increasing the income ceiling for Medicaid.

Same intent - bring more people under government controled healthscare.

No doubt we will see both the age for Medicare continue to go down in the future and the income ceiling for Medicaid continue to go up.

At the same time, notice that these insurance companies being set up by the government are national. The real insurance companies that must compete with them are not allowed to sell across state lines.

This gives the government companies an advantage right out the door.

So the plan is complete when the real insurance companies are driven out of business and we are left with no where to go - besides Big Brother.

This is the Democrats' problem. You can't negotiate with most connies. They go all the way and drop the public option and it gains not one single Republican vote. The Dems don't get it and they just give everything away and Harry Reid is too much of a wimp to take it to reconciliation like the Republicans would have done. But on the other hand, Roland Burris might vote against it if there's no public option. While he's not the best example of a senator, it will be interesting to see at least one progressive take a stand for once.

It's the public option by a different name.

Dems think that citizens are idiots.

Bub I wasn't talking to you. There was a large portion of this country that bought into this type of rhetoric last November.

So they're not going to let us in on the details of the agreement. "Hi, we're from the Senate and we know what's best for you.... You know that you can trust us."

    Not in a million years.

Charles Krauthammer made an interesting comment last night on Fox. He said [quoting loosely] that the dems could have put everyone on single payer system with a one page bill simply by extending medicare to everyone.

Of course the dems have to be devious in everything they do though a few are honest enough to admit that they want to socialize medicine.

I was discussing the dems plan to socialize medicine with a doctor Monday. He was of the opinion that Obama wanted a socialist government which is what I have been saying for over a year.

They gave that indication last fall. Joe the Plumber was smart enough to call Obama a socialist but nobody cared.

The dems think only people over 55 are idiots.

I suspect Paul is one of the young sprouts who voted for Obama and now he is going to have to pay!

Of course with the death panel pool extended down to 55 perhaps the problem will soon be solved, especially if young leftists make up the panel!

I believe most of us knew what he was when he was running. I think your doctor is correct.

I recall after LBJ won, every body was saying how bad he was and they didn't vote for him. He won by a land slide. I'm seeing the same today about BHO.

The young, the poor, government workers, and union members will vote for the most part for socialism. Most of the young want what their parents have with out working their way up to it, they have had it as long as they can recall. The poor just want something better, if they have earn being poor or bad breaks drove them there. The others work in a socialist work environment, so they will go for it for the most part. Anytime one isn't paid on quality of work but on time put in, leads to this way of thinking, I believe.

So now we all get to pay.
