Health care loophole would allow coverage limits

WASHINGTON – A loophole in the Senate health care bill would let insurers place annual dollar limits on medical care for people struggling with costly illnesses such as cancer, prompting a rebuke from patient advocates.
The legislation that originally passed the Senate health committee last summer would have banned such limits, but a tweak to that provision weakened it in the bill now moving toward a Senate vote.

As currently written, the Senate Democratic health care bill would permit insurance companies to place annual limits on the dollar value of medical care, as long as those limits are not "unreasonable." The bill does not define what level of limits would be allowable, delegating that task to administration officials.

    From the OP article:

Adding to the puzzle, the new language was quietly tucked away in a clause in the bill still captioned "No lifetime or annual limits."

    And this:

"We don't know who put it in, or why it was put in," said Stephen Finan, a policy expert with the cancer society's advocacy affiliate.

The patients truly are running the mental hospital.

Why should a private insurance company not be allowed to set limits?

The real question is why would democrats be willing to allow them to?

Seems somehow out of sync with what they are trying to do.

It sounds like the people who have posted about this are opposed to it.

Actually, to my understanding the point of the thread is not the limits but rather the dems non-transparent way of doing business.

Title the bill "No lifetime or annual limits" and then insert wording which will do just the opposite.

And make sure no one can be identified as the one responsible for it.

Then tout to the American people that you are protecting them from the bad old insurance companies.

Wasn't the big reason given for the need for this whole healthscare bill that insurance companies just collect premium and then don't pay for services when you need them?

Bills have changes made to them quite frequently as they go through the legislative process.

Yes, but do the changes normally go the opposite of the title and the supposed purpose of the bill?

Do we normally not know who is making the changes?

Scratch that - we are talking about the dems here.

You know - the ones who told us how they were going to be the most transparent administration ever.

The ones who told us that they were going to be the most ethical administration ever.

    Granted.

But this was specifically added for a reason and , believe me, it has nothing to do with protecting insurance companies. Democrats protecting insurance companies? That'll be the day the devil sells popsicles in hell.

Throughout this process democrats have demonized the industry and some of them have been quite frank about wanting to put all of them out of business.

Now this? Something is rotten in Denmark. (besides the GW scam)

There are several possibilities, but I haven't finished thinking them through. My gut reaction is that it could somehow be used as an excuse for the government to ration care as well.

    Any ideas?

Some democrat politicians have been pushing for a Marxist society since FDR. It seems that they are now a large enough majority in Congress to realize their devilish dream.
