Another good example for home schooling.

Another good example to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. There's NO way my kids would have joined in on this. As a matter of fact, they've come to the defense of the teachers when the kids were being disrespectful.

The father of one girl said "“She didn’t think,” he said." No, really? Well then, we'll let her off. That's a great excuse. Use it when a cop pulls you over for going through a red light. (rolling eyes)

"“It’s my job to teach her, not the school’s,” he said." Hmmm - then maybe do your job??

Just try to do this for a boss and see what happens to an employee. Kids need to know that words count.

As I said on the other thread, this was libel or close to it. That is not covered by free speech.

And the school does have a right to order detention, imo, because it involved attacks on a teacher at the school.

Too many kids these days are being taught there are no consequences due to the lack of discipline, busy parents, political correctness, fear of offending, etc.

If my child had joined as a fan, I would back the school in the detention.

I agree and as I said before, if my child had joined as a fan, they'd WISH they'd only get detention.

    Bolded is my emphasis:

If this is correctly stated as to how one becomes 'a fan' of a website.... that it doesn't require a visit to join, then I firmly agree with this parent's position concerning the limitation of the school in disciplining children's behavior which occurrs outside the schools' jurisdiction.

A paradigm shift has occurred over the years where the schools have taken authority away from the parents... some was willingly given... but some was taken without parental consent. It is one thing if parents are informed and refuse to take authority over the situation.... but another when the school assumes it knows whats best for Johnny and Mary regarding values and behaviors without respect for parental input or authority.

What are you talking about. I got disciplined at school many times without my parents involvement or knowledge. I certainly didn't tell them because then I would have gotten it twice just as these kids should be treated. The parents should back up the school's discipline and then use the wood shed at home as an added bonus.

Not really. IMO, if a parent is not willing to allow his child to be subject to a valid discipline, then that parent is not fit to homeschool.

I read the word wood shed and it made me flinch. We not only had a woodshed but a willow tree right next to it. Not much difference between a green willow branch and a buggy whip.... but I digress.

Remember life before Facebook? Remember way back when if you wanted to mock a teacher you had to use paper? If you were part of a group passing notes or spray painting the wall behind the school you all got in trouble. Now a 10 year old can be 1000 miles away, whip out their Blackberry and be in contact with all their little snot-nosed friends. Geography means nothing.

But Mr. Rochette, your daughter did cause a disruption at school. She wasn't physically at school when it happened but it involved a teacher and a bunch of students. Now be a big boy and let your daughter learn a very important lesson. There are consequences to our actions.

Good! I'm glad you got it.

It was the same for me.... and anything done wrong at school.... whether or not disciplined there... I caught it at home.... and wore stripes to prove it!

You didn't read my post. You are already involved with your emotions and let this get the best of your rationale..... which is usually very good or you could reread my post.

A face book fan, according to this father's statement, doesn't require a visit to the site but merely an acceptance of an invite (and I qualified that in my statement.... if this is true as reported since I'm unfamiliar with face book).

Following your point..... what about 'fans' who accept an invitation to join without visiting a site.... and what about the 5 students who don't go to this school? And what about any others...... children or adults who 'join' this facebook invitation? Just where does the jurisdiction of the school end?

The child who posted the page was disciplined.... but the school informed HER parents and her parent agreed to remove the page..... and probably was informed and may have participated in agreement to the disciplinary process.

You can't become a fan of a page on FB unless you visit the page first, then at the top of the page, there is a button to click to become a fan...

The girl lied if she said she didn't visit the page.

    Thank you tinytim.

If anyone else had read my post or my previous post, they would have realized my concerns regarding the discipline of 'fans' were mostly based on this point of knowing involvement.

I still think any discipline of children for behavior occurring off grounds should still include informing the parents... or an honest attempt made to inform them before the school unilaterally assumes jurisdiction.

Sometimes, without realizing it, it is examples such as this incident which lead us to agree to institutional or agency actions and deny the very basic principles and responsibility and authority on which our freedoms are based.

If the authority of the home wasn't being overridden or under attack.... we would not have other threads open on children taking Bibles and tracts to school, or sex education in school, or field trips to sodomite weddings, or questionaires and assessments asking personal and private family information without parental knowledge or consent, or school counselors insisting on female students taking an in-school pregnancy test.... based on rumours.... without allowing the child to inform or access to her parents, etc. And these involve ON THE GROUNDS areas where schools have jurisdiction. When its off grounds.... the parents should be participant... and if they refuse to discipline or accept a reasonable suggestion of discipline..... then, if there is justification, let the school take it to court.

Just for the record, the five students who do not attend the same school ... more than likely they do attend the same school district ( which would have the same district superintendent). Possibly, those students had that teacher the year before, but are now in the high school. I don't know for sure, but that would be an educated guess.

North Syracuse is one of the largest districts in Onondaga County - of the 17 county wide public school districts.

You do join by going to the site, as far as I know. Besides, if she did it without knowing what it was about, then she still needs to learn to be careful about what she joins and "clicks on." Frankly, this sounds like a typical teenage copout.

Around here at least, there is not enough authority in the school nor at home and kids get into all kinds of bad stuff.

Oh, man! And I'll be on a business trip at that time. We need to disagree on something so I can get back before the rapture :wavey:
