I've been working with a young lady since the end of December who weighed 255lbs. and is 5'4". I set up a weight resistance routine for her to do and have met with her a couple times since to show her some new exercises and intensify her routine. I also make it a point to ask how she is doing and discuss diet a couple times a week while giving her some motivational pep talk. She is down to 230 now and is really becoming devoted.

Anyway, I get such a kick out of people getting excited when they start to see some of the many changes that their body will go through. This is the message she sent me tonight:

One can't can't put a price on the joy these little rewards bring.

Not yet, just a helpful kind of guy that is quick pick up on people's needs in these type of areas, enjoy my work, and strongly believe in the "quality of life" benefits. Although, I am working on getting a Bachelor's degree of Health Science in Physical Therapy while in the process of earning an Associates degree in Physical Therapy.

the physical therapist whose been a part of my work outs at the nearby physical therapy(we don't have a gym nearby) has no idea about my dietary needs, and has more then once insisted on contradicting my medical professionals, like doctors and highly specialized in my area nutritionist. only a total idiot would claim to be a medical professional and contradict specialists who are actually educated in my specialized needs, and he is not. you ahve to be careful what your telling someone, they may have special needs you don't know all about them because it isn't your area of speciality.

Yeah, I’ve also seen medical professionals that don’t use the common sense of a bug concerning getting to the roots of the problems; their education often is surrounded by RX companies which go to the colleges and promote the use of their drugs. Physicians often will do little more than write prescriptions that put a temporary bandage on the issue and which will often have harmful side effects. A medical professional’s job is to go outside the box while being critical and analytical and striving to meet all the patient’s needs and working together with others by looking at the whole picture; my HCC professor has been pounding that in our heads for a couple weeks now. If you have healthcare workers which are disagreeing with each other I would directly raise these issues to each and everyone of them and ask questions.

You certainly should go with whom you feel more comfortable with; I wouldn’t tell you any different. Getting the patient involved in the decision making and actively participating in their own wellness is said to be a growing important trend and it is being taught it should be the goal of the HCW. But just because of one’s specialty doesn’t mean you can’t “raise these issues” with him, whatever they are, because, let me repeat:

“A medical professional’s job is to go outside the box while being critical and analytical and striving to meet all the patient’s needs and working together with others by looking at the whole picture”

If your Specialist cops an attitude rather than carefully listening to you as a patient and evaluating what other HCW’s are suggesting then he is the one who is not being professional. You have every right to ask in detail about these controversies and expect an answer; then like you said you go with whom you prefer.

Another goal of the Health Care Professionals is to expand their fields so on that point I wouldn’t assume your PT knows nothing of value about nutrition, actually I know it’s even part of the training, and your nutritionist shouldn’t be neglecting the PT side.

Thanks, it's a blessing to me too when I see other's joy. What I am doing with her amounts to personal training and I work really cheap for the experience and to see the thrills...actually I'm free.

If I needed a cardiologist my doctor wouldn't send me to a dentist. She knows thier limits and her own, and they each know their limits for treating someone. Which means, if I need a specialist I'm going to him, not a physical therapist. Any real medical professional knows their own limits and the limits of any other doctor they may send me too.
Therefore, I'll take the qualifyed specialists over a therapist anyday.

Ditto! You are as much an inspiration to her as she is to you, Benjamin. :)

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Speaking of inspiration, do any of you watch the show called "Ruby"? She was 713 pounds when she took control of her life. No professionals, no trainers, no surgeries, she just pushed herself away from the table.

After losing over 300 pounds on her own, because of reaching plateaus and needing to dig in further, a TV show took Ruby on. She's down to roughly 330 pounds, and she does have professionals and trainers on her team now. Her new season begins this weekend.

Ruby is an inspiration to all of us, for she works out every day as well as adhering to a strict diet. I believe that diet is little w/o a fitness plan. I love Ruby's show! :)

Thanks, never heard of Ruby, sounds interesting though, I'll have to see if I can find it. Sounds like she will be needing some work due to her extra skin, eventually. I'm hoping the person I'm working with doesn't have too many issues with this; I've told her to not to be overly concerned with that for now and that it will be worth it even if she does have to deal with this.

I have no idea what kind of nutritional issues you are talking about or even if the PT and Nutritional care are related to the same set of circumstances. If they are related then avoiding the point I've tried to make of raising these issues between them is up to you.
