What are your thoughts about legalizing marijuana for medical purposes?

Should Christians support or oppose it?

I'd appreciate reading your views on this issue as to why we as Christians should either support it or oppose it.

I do think it's a volotile topic since marjuana has been illegal for so long. However, it's been shown to be an effective pain killer in people when other drugs do not work. I do think that regulated medical use can be beneficial thus I think looking into legalizing it is a good idea.

I see no reason for Christians to oppose it. Compared to more synthetic remedies, marijuana is generally much less costly, is easier on the environment, easier on the human body, and does the job it is prescribed for.

It is legal in Canada. I have more questions than answers as I see the people who actually use it "medicinally".

Then, there are a lot of questions about the pharmaceutical organizations too. Maybe medical people should be more prudent about all prescribed medications.

Marijuana is still a smoke that enters the lungs with all the residual problems that entails.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I think I've read that the ingredient of marijuana in pill form is just as effective as smoking the weed.

Keep in mind that there has been a movement since the 70s to legalize marijuana (not just for medical reasons) and they see this as one way to do it.

And look at CA - it's a joke there to get a prescription. There are doctors who have quit their practice just to prescribe marijuana.

I'm not convinced that medical marijuana is necessary and I am concerned about the effects of legalizing it.

So we can put you down in favor of being drunk. Got it!
Seriously though, I uinderstand that the pill form of THC, Marinol, is much more difficult to titrate than self-administered use of marijuana. It is legal in Colorado for medicinal purposes, and though I have never touched the stuff, believe it is a personal decision if one wants to use it in their own home. Prohibition causes more problems than it solves.

    Why do you say that?

My daughter is currently on pain killers because of a tough wisdom tooth extraction. She's not allowed to drive while she's on these. So in effect, they are making her get to a similar state as "drunk". Should she not take them?

I, personally, would not use it--unless they put it in a pill.

So very true! And whether or not it is a personal choice does not make it right or mean it should be condoned by Christians.

They way it is currently being handled in California is a joke, and it is obviously a farce which is often abused. Basically you have a entire group of pro legalization people using the "medical" excuse to mainstream the drug.

If it was treated like any other drug prescribed by legitimate doctors on a limited bases and sold by standard pharmacists, I could see the benefits for some people.

Big difference between being in a drowsy like condition and the powerful phychological effects caused by marijuana, IMO.

There are plenty of strong prescription pain medicines that would be as strong or stronger than marijuana. Are you saying Christians under all circumstances should refuse this medicine?

I think there are much better drugs to control pain and most, if not all of hype behind the use of marijuana is being lead by promoters of it. In the old days they used to pour wiskey down someone before taking out a bullet or cutting of a limb, but that was all they had; we have much better things available today. I am referring to the psychological effects; and weighing that against the pain relieving effects, which would be mild at best, are not worth it and there are better and more effective pain meds.

First off, I don't believe the main benefits and reasoning behind the use of medial marijuana is as a pain medicine.

Second, you didn't answer my question.

Well, let me spill my guts in public again and repost my experience with this drug that has to do with the psychological (drunken) effects, and see if that answers your question:

"Was a regular user of Marijuana at age 13. It helped with the pain of emotional scars but the problem was that it helped by covering it up as a bandage but did nothing towards the healing. It was a false sense of utopia, an unnatural feeling of finding happiness and enlightening through a means which was a lie, a sense of spiritual awaking that was not lead by the Holy Spirit but a harmful chemical reaction within in my brain.

My sense of judgment was seriously impaired, often deep seemingly enlightening thoughts were later realized to be quite meaningless after coming down off the high. My desires and cravings were heightened, such as getting the “munches” which lead to bouts of bulimia because of over indulgence. There are also regrets for my lack of action on many things because of a sense of paranoia type reasoning resulting in some really bad judgment in matters.

I became very psychologically addicted because it was all that I had to cover up even more emotional pains that I did not want to face. For a long time I realized what this drug was doing to and for me but I could not bare to quit. I smoked more and more to avoid coming down, first thing in the morning and last thing before falling asleep and was desperate to keep a constant supply. Although I worked, I bought and sold it to keep myself in supply and all my income revolved around these sales and my usage. I resorted to ripping of dealers if I should fall behind and nothing mattered more than keeping a supply so I could remain having “fun” and keep being “relaxed” in my life.

I began having dreams and nightmares that I woke up from and often couldn’t tell what was real and what was not, another joint would take care of that though! It was the hardest thing I have ever done to quit. When I did I had nothing to my name; I had to then face at the age of 26 things I should have been dealing with back when I started. I couldn’t have fun anymore without it because I did not know how to feel good naturally as those trigger connections in my brain were used to artificial stimulations. Years of mental anguish and misery passed as I suffered from the effects with only a very slow progress in recovery which today seems like a blur as if another person’s life. I remember about three years after quitting I realized I was living better, I had a business started, and a better home and vehicle and more importantly was working out the emotional scars in my life. I especially remember one day driving in my truck and feeling good and began singing to a song on the radio which I just then realized I had not done such or felt that way since I had quit.

Although I believe God was near me and calling me from the time I was a little boy, the spirits which were controlling my life were predominately chemical and one might say I allowed marijuana to be my god.

Now that I have revealed to you all some of how messed up my life has been to get this point across, let me give my opinion that use of marijuana is very dangerous and harmful for many reasons and no Christian should risk engaging those spirits.

P.S. I started many many people smoking pot and kept them high and I seriously doubt anyone here has as much experience. I have no doubt that still today I could give someone a joint and start convincing them to do and believe things they would not ordinarily do or believe because of knowing what is going on in their mind. I could look and smell a bag of weed and tell you if it was of any quality whatsoever and rather it would take between one and three hits to intoxicate you and I seriously doubt any medical usage would stop before that point. "

I remember a thread awhile back where some here were saying pot was the same as having a drink or two. In that thread I was in agreement with you that is wasn't, but this is different.

I admire you for overcoming what you went through, but by your own admission it sounds like you had some emotional problems that compounded your addiction. There is a big difference from a child of thirteen abusing a drug than with an adult on chemo using moderately under a doctors supervision to help with nausea. It sounds like you most likely have/had an addictive personality, many people do, and obviously because of your experience it has shaped your opinion. But you might not be the most objective person to decide whether or not someone should or shouldn't use medical marijuana, your view is obviously prejudiced because of the problems you had.

If you read my first post on this thread you will see that I am not in favor of the system that is currently being pushed for medical marijuana, and in reality often just a farce for many people to basically just get high.

Pertaining to nausea, the only possibly halfway reasonable argument I know of; if there was no better or ethical way to control it, and if it was truly unbearable otherwise, and if only for a short time...maybe...but I would advise dealing with it in others ways.

I would not agree about any addictive tendencies prejudicing my opinion in this matter, being aware that my case was extreme, but not the root cause. The fact that I started and enabled many other people to begin using or continue in it under similar circumstances and that experienced the same types of effects testifies that it was much more than my personality type that was involved.

Glad you see through the rhetoric and recognize te motive of most of the promoters of this drug.

Morphine is used medicinally, I have no problem with marijuana being used in the same way...and I do have a problem with drunkeness.
