I am surprised, and pleased, with this outcome.

Can Ron Paul Win the GOP 2012 Presidential Nomimation????

Ron Paul Wins Presidential Straw Poll at CPAC

Paul, a Republican congressman from Texas known for his libertarian views, ran for president in 2008 but was never a serious contender for the GOP nomination.

Ron Paul has ended Mitt Romney's three-year run as conservatives' favorite for president, taking 31 percent of the vote in the Conservative Political Action Conference's annual straw poll.

Paul, a Republican congressman from Texas known for his libertarian views, ran for president in 2008 but was never a serious contender for the GOP nomination.

Romney, former Massachusetts governor and also a 2008 GOP candidate, has won the last three presidential straw polls at the annual conference. This year, he came in second, with 22 percent.

Sarah Palin, who didn't attend the conference, was a distant third in the straw poll, with 7 percent, followed by Tim Pawlenty, the Minnesota governor, and Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana.

You can make stats say anything you want to.

    From ABC NEWS

    The story said in part:
"Nearly half of all those voting in the CPAC straw poll were students. Young people were a clear part of the activist energy fueling Ron Paul’s candidacy in 2008 too."

    From the political wire :

    in part;
"When Mr. Paul's name was announced in the packed ballroom of a Washington hotel, it elicited hoots and boos along with applause. Although Mr. Romney won fewer votes, he seemed to draw stronger applause."

Fox news also reported that all in attendance at C-pac did NOT vote. I wonder how many, and WHY not?

I am not surprised that the Big Government conservatives there would boo Ron Paul. Limited government folks certainly would not boo him.

    From Lew Rockwell:

"The Republican political establishment was rocked today when Ron Paul — advocate of the un-Republican policies of free markets, sound money, non-intervention. and civil liberties — won the CPAC straw poll, beating Romney (who had typically spent a bunch to win it), Sarah Palin, and the Eight Dwarfs. The DC corruptionists are already playing down the results, of course, but they are whistling past the neocon graveyard, and how sweet it is."

    From Michael McGuire:

"While everyone on the right wants the nation to change leadership, there are increasing rumblings on the right that suggest the same type of change offered in the past won’t do in 2010 and 2012.

What may be coming to the Republican party is a more moderate stance on social issues and a stronger stance on economic issues(e.g., Scott Brown - KenH notes) relating to the dismantling of bureaucracy.

Also brought to the debate is whether the conservative movement of the future will continue to support mammoth foreign intervention. An increasing number of activists on the right are no longer in the mood for war and other policies they associate with empire."

Which means only 23% voted, up from a normal 17%.

By the way, I am a very strong limited govt advocate, I would not have booed Paul, but only because it is bad manners, and it breaks Reagan's 11th commandment.

But then again, Paul is only a RINO...

That's good since the standard Republican Party politician is LGINO - Limited Government In Name Only. And Ron Paul is certainly not LGINO. He is the most consistent pro-liberty federal political office holder in the GOP. But hopefully that will change by his son, Rand, being elected to the U.S. Senate this year. Then we would have two most consistent pro-liberty federal political office holders in the GOP.

Ken you still engage in liberal falsities. It is without a doubt completely untrue that if you are not for Ron Paul then you are a big government supporter. It is poor logic at best, a lousy argument, and more likely to be intellectual dishonesty. But what ever soothes your conscience.

Why would anyone person who supposedly supports limited government boo a fellow person who has proven by his voting record that he truly supports limited government when he is about to make a speech. I submit that any person who truly supports limited government would not boo Ron Paul before he was about to make a speech.

The folks that Bill Potter writes about are probably the ones who were booing Ron Paul.

    "Writes Bill Potter:
What I learned at CPAC: Conservatives believe in freedom. The freedom to warmonger, torture, loot, search, and surveil without a warrant, classify anyone an enemy combatant and imprison them indefinitely, incur limitless debt to be paid off in worthless currency, and finally, rule the world.

As for the Ron Paul supporters, we believe in freedom period!

During a panel presentation of conservative student activists, I got the feeling I was in the presence of real-life Tracy Flicks, the fictional character from the great black comedy Election. Creepy."

Maybe they do not like his methods or maybe there is another issue. Who knows but one does not lead to the other.

In this particular case I think the evidence says it does.

But no intelligent person would take this "straw vote" as a strong indication for a solid Republican support for Paul

    Who has said it does?

We saw the true nature of the Republican Party when it controlled the White House and both houses of Congress. And that nature is Big Government.
