A Baptist pastor comes out in support of homosexuals

    No surprise...the church he is a pastor of also has a woman "pastor". Saying that homosexuals can become church members is just another failing of that church.

    I'm not sure what he's saying. He's a "welcomer" of gays and lesbians. What does he mean by this? Invite them to his church so that they can accept the gospel and be freed from their lifestyle of sin? Or invite them to participate in his church family and community? Though I believe in accepting people in bondage to sin and will share the gospel with them. I don't think its appropiate to allow that life style as an acceptable practice in the community of believers.

    " If one reads selected Bible verses without serious and careful attention to their larger context then one can derive this conclusion. If one begins with an unexamined claim that “the Bible says homosexuality is wrong, bad, and evil,” then the conclusion is prejudged. But careful reading reveals that what is condemned is something other than people who are gay living out their sexual orientation in the same monogamous and faithful way that heterosexuals do."

    " If anything, those who take the risk of visiting a church as a gay person are more likely to be gentle, loving, God-honoring, servant-spirit individuals who desire to find a community of faith. Gay people, like all people, need a community to join in walking with God, learning from Jesus, and being open to the Holy Spirit’s leading. (Speaking of the Holy Spirit: if we believe the Holy Spirit has the ability to convince and convict people of sin, then why not welcome gay and lesbians to church, preach what the Bible focuses on and not simply rail against homosexuality, and let the Holy Spirit sort it out?)"

    What's he's saying is pretty clear. He currently has church members that are homosexuals. That tells me he is not just welcoming them so that they can accept the Gospel and be freed from their sin.

    It's obvious that his welcoming stance is not just an issue of welcoming them to the services, but into the active, involved ministries of the church. The editorial makes that clear.

    Highland Baptist is probably the most liberal in Kentucky. I don't know if they still have SBC affiliation but I seriously doubt it. Acceptance of women pastors and homosexuality, as well as denying that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, is par for the course at Highland. (Shame on them for that.)They have a beautiful old building in an old but affluent Louisville neighborhood, and are very active in neighborhood outreach. (Kudos to them for their outreach efforts.) I think it's fair to say this would be the prototyical Southern Baptist church if the conservative movement had not gained control of the SBC in the 1980's.

    So not just welcoming homosexuals to come and hear the gospel, but to be church members and be able to continue with a sinful lifestyle.
    Not a church I'd ever be a part of. But of course is they have a woman pastor they're already preaching error, can't expect anything better then this from them.

    The church is affiliated with the Kentucky Baptist Convention.

    They do support some KBC entities nominally but mainly support CBF and KBF
