In a mailing I got from a Republican-ish organization, the following statement was made:

"Maybe you are unaware that the federal government will have direct access to your bank accounts for elective funds transfer"

    What does that mean?

Sigh. It mean there is an allowance for bills/insurance to be paid directly out of your bank account, just like any other bill you pay directly. For instance, I have my water and garbage bills drawn directly out of my account. I get the bill, so tht I am informed of how much will be withdrawn, look at it, record it in my register and throw it away.

So, this is most likely not as bad as they make it sound.

No that is not the purpose.

The purpose of accessing bank accounts is to gather information to determine who does and does not qualify for government subsidy of insurance premiums.

The problem is that not only people who are requesting or receiving subsidies will have this search done of their financial records - everyone will.

The pretense is that the government will be looking for people who qualify for a subsidy but have not applied for one.

This should be considered a privacy violation - but I guess that for democrats privacy only includes abortion.

Well, the IRS is charged with enforcing this law. They'd love to look into everyone's accounts. Might find some tax cheats while they are in there.

Do you have a link to the specific language that allows this?

Not to mention their wanting to be able to deduct from your account those fines they decide are necessary if you don't have health care.

What is the name of this "Republican-ish organization". I would like to know the source of this claim.

That is always the best policy. Never go into dept buying anything that depreciated in value.

If you owe the IRS they can take it out whether you want them to or not. In fact if your spouse owes them and you have a separate account they can still tap your account if he does not have enough to pay them off.

They don't need your bank account. All they need is your employer's name and address. They will be able to take it straight out of your paycheck. I know two men where I work who owe back child support, that is what happens to them.

but the difference with the child support is that they were given a chance to pay what they rightfully owe, before the gov took all the legal steps required to remove from their paycheck.

Same with the IRS and back taxes. You owe the money and you KNOW you owe the money but made no effort to pay.

not so sure with this, but a link to the actual bill and/or the site cited in the op would be helpful.

    Here's a link...

The link came to me from an outfit called "GOPUSA."

Here's a link to the actual article:

    http://www.gopusa.com/commentary/dpatton/2010/dp_03291.shtml

He really just kinda mentions it in passing - doesn't really explain it.

But it's got my wife all worried, complaining and thinking we should withdraw all our money and...do what with it?

Maybe I should take advantage of the opportunity. "Well, Honey, since the government is going to confiscate our savings to pay for health care for illegals, maybe I should withdraw a few thousand and stimulate the American economy by purchasing an American-made Fender bass, a Ruger single-shot rifle and a lever-action .44 Mag carbine."

    Hmm....

I'm not going to disagree. My point is that the government can get your money if they desire.

You are exactly right. Been this way, in the case of the IRS for about 40 years already. Our parents should have fought the issue when it came up. Since they didn't (or at least didn't win), we are stuck with it. However, the HC is just more of the same. Nothing to get excited about.
