    This happens far too often.

    Ours our wooden pews (does that come from the smell of so many people sitting on them for so many years?) with pads.

    We have a newer sanctuary (it's 30 years old) and it was built as an all-purpose room so we have chairs with pads that attach together and can be removed easily. Just this past Sunday, we had our annual church dinner and budget vote where we sat 650 people in the sanctuary at tables. We have no other space where we would have been able to do that. We can also use the room for wedding receptions and other large events like we're going to have for special needs kids in a few weeks. :)

    I know - that type of format is so much more practical. Personally though, I still prefer the traditional sanctuary (of course, I'm an old guy).

    Our sanctuary was built to be all purpose, so we have chairs with padding.

    Wooden pews. No cushions. And the backs are at a wierd angle. They're kind of uncomfortable but, hey, I've got to do something to keep them awake when I preach.

    Padded pews for which I am thankful. In my case the following formula is true.

    Skin and bones butt/hard pews = pain
