It's good to offend the muslims every now & then.

Keeps them on their toes. :D :D

The way I see it, the only reason the "offended body" (the Islamic Human Rights Commission) exists is to be perpetually offended. So, by hacking them off, we're actually doing them a favor.

Of course, Mr. Straw might need to walk a fine line. If he offends the wrong folks, he might become "the last Straw."

Now we must be conscientious of our Muslim Brothers and Sisters...
I say, we extend them an olive branch of Peace...

Invite them over to celebrate Easter and serve ham, or a rack of Pork Ribs for dinner!

Come to think about it, my wife wore a veil at our wedding... I wonder if it hindered communication...

Did she say "I do"??? hmmmmm....

Does a full veil hinder communications?

Probably no more than a screen door!

If one has to kiss through it.... I'd say there's strained relations!

:tongue3: now return to more serious discourse.

If I am talking to someone in person I want to be able to see their face. If I wanted to talk to them without seeing them I would call them on the phone.

The real issue is that a veil hides the identity of the person. There is a real criminals were masks and obscure their faces... they can't be readily identified. A veil works the same way. There have been cases of suicide bombers in the Middle East who dressed like women because it allowed them to pass undetected... we do not need that here or anywhere else.

If Muslims want to force their wives and daughters to wear a veil at home, that is their prerogative. But if they are in public it should not be allowed (at least not in the US). They are more than welcome to stay in the Middle East and not come here.

How about all women over the age of 40 wearing a veil?

Watch it Billwald. I have a rolling pin and I'm not afraid to use it!

Yes, a full veil hinders communication. I have a bit of hearing loss combined with a auditory processing problem (mild and most likely caused by my ADD) and often rely on lip reading to fully understand what a person is saying. A veil will hinder my ability to interpret what a person is trying to communicate.

In my town, Halloween trick-or-treaters may not wear masks. It's illegal. I guess that means Muslim girls won't be able to trick-or-treat this year.

in our town anyone over the age of 14 can not wear a halloween masks, because it hides the identity of those seeking mischief, why would we let muslim women walk around wear a veil over their face and hide their identity, doesn't make sense.

I hate to be the one to break up this party...

but in America, we still have freedom of religion, and Muslims are just practicing their religion by wearing a veil...

I don't agree with them, I think they are going to Hell because they reject Jesus.. but I will stand and fight for their freedom of religion.

If we hinder their practicing, who is next? Baptists?

I see your point, Tim, but there are laws against hiding/onscuring one's face, escecially over a certain age. I know that Tennessee has such laws. What would they be to prevent someone in a veil from holding up a bank, gunning someone down, or pulling a drive-by shooting?

The practice of forcing women to wear veils is more akin to religious slavery, not religious freedom... just like forbidding them from talking to men or being able to leave the home alone.

Tim, This is not so much a issue of religion, but is it unreasonable for an individual to want to speak "face to face" with someone. Would it be inappropriate for the individual to end the conversation if the veil wearer refused to remove it.

Or likewise, Tom is a bank loan officer and Jim comes in for a loan, but Jim is intent on witnessing to Tom until he gets saved. Is it inappropriate for Jim to end the conversation? Jim says he has freedom of religion.

Can you provide documentation on any of these laws? I am unaware of any such laws on the books and would be interested to see them.

are you kidding, to walk around town with your face covered and think your not going to be questioned because it's illegal is ridiculous, what if I go into a bank with my face covered, what then?

Going in a bank with your face covered is completely different than walking around town. One is a private business, which may have a rule such as no head coverings, and the other is public. I'm simply looking for documentation that laws exist that say one can't have head coverings. I'm wondering how those laws deal with motorcycle helmets and ski masks.

If head coverings were illegal, the klu klux klan would be in jail every time they marched for that reason alone. They aren't put in jail for that reason, so I'm guessing it isn't against the law, at least in the places they have marched.

In my private place of business I certainly would not do business with anyone that had their head covered (no matter if it was a veil, helmet, or ski mask). Just because I believe that for my business does not mean I think it should be a law for the public space.

This is what my OP was all about. Not the legality of it, but proper business etiquette.

Understood, but as with most threads here we've gone beyond the OP :).

so it's ok for a muslim woman to enter a bank with her face covered or not? as I said we have laws here. marching in a parade is one thing, walking around town with a covered face is another, and they won't do it here.

It would depend on the local laws and the policy of the bank. If there were no local laws to prohibit the wearing of a veil and the bank had no policy against it, then, no, it would not be a problem for a muslim woman to enter a bank with her face covered.

Can you point me to the law that you reference? Does this law specifically talk about veils, or any type of head covering? How does it deal with helmets and ski masks?

I can see it right now........

A proprietor in a little shop..... hoping for business

A masked (albeit 'veiled' ) person enters and approaches the owner at the register.....

...... as the owner takes from a concealed space and makes very visible the displey of a
48 or 35 (or is it the other way around...??? I know little about hand guns)
