Baja Quake: The Earth Just Shook and Rolled...

You will be the first to know that as I was sitting here reading the BB posts, we, here in southern California, just felt the earth move like it hasn't moved in a few years.

Checking the USG, a 6.9 quake, 32 km deep, struck in Baja, and it was one of those that made us feel like we were on a boat in turbulent seas.

It rolled for a good minute, and reports are that it was felt as far north as Santa Barbara.

We live only 130 miles from the epi-center, and to feel that much motion under our feet, well, let's just say, it is one of those moments where you begin to pray that the Lord intervene on the behalf of all humanity!!!:tonofbricks:

There was no damage to our house, but the words of Paul in Ephesians 5:14-15 (Amplified Bible) came to mind, on this "sleepy Easter Afternoon" -"Therefore He says, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine (make day dawn) upon you and give you light. Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people)."

Earthquakes always seem to serve as a reminder to those who are asleep in their walk with Jesus, to "Awake, arise, look, live, and be wise!" When the ground rolls under your feet, it reminds you just how uncertain, and how unstable the planet truly is. What seems to be solid and firm, under our feet, can, without warning, shake, rattle and roll your nerves and "awaken" ones faith in a matter of seconds. AMEN!!!

Wow!! I've been through 2 earthquakes - one in CA and one in NY. It's kind of weird but cool at the same time. Well, cool if it's not damaging or anything!

    Just Nerves Shook Up

This was a big quake... and it did shake up the senses, and called upon our faith to remain steady...

I can relate, Pastor Paul. We were still living in CA during the Loma Prieta quake of 89. Talk about a long 15 seconds!!!! (most of which were spent under a table praying!!) And we weren't even close to the epicenter. Glad you are ok.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area and lived there in my earlier married years, and as you can imagine went through a lot of quakes, large and small, including a 6.2 or thereabouts I believe when I was working in a building with rollers in the foundation. Those tend to keep you safe but boy did I get dizzy! I have to say I do not miss those experiences one bit!!

    It Was Up-Graded to a 7.2

I knew the quake was big, but, it has grown from the 6.9 to a 7.2. There are now reports of destruction coming in. We'll have to wait and see how bad it realy was. But, for my house, we are once again on semi-solid ground, that is, until the next time the earth shakes.:tonofbricks:

I've only been in a location where an earthquake took place twice. They were both fairly low on the rickter scale.

One happened during the night while I was sleeping, and it didnt wake me, so I missed it.

The other happened during the day, but I was working 3rd shift then, so I was sleeping during the day and slept through THAT one.

I was going to make a joke about missing the "thrills and excitement" of an earthquake, but the Haiti situation :tear: brings it all in focus.

I hope I miss all earthquakes.

I felt a small quake in Santa Barbara in 78, I think it was a 5.2. I'm glad your OK Paul, but it does tend to give one the willies.

    Thanks Rick....

I'm fine... our dog has never been through one of these things though, and she didn't know if she should jump in my wife's lap, or, just hold tightly to the floor. She held to the floor.

Strange as this sounds, our one cat continues to predict these shakers. Anywhere in the world. She goes and lays under a stool, and within 36 hours we hear about a quake, or, we experience one. Just widh I knew which place her quakes were going to hit...

Was at work during the small quake in central Illinois in spring 2008. It was very weird to have my chair roll across the floor a couple of inches on its own. While I was sitting in it.

I too can relate Paul, I was in the Seattle quake of 2001, a 6.8.

I was in the Boeing first floor rest room. I won't go into detail except to say that when I saw the tiles popping off the floor as the waves went through I knew we were in trouble.

    Obviously I survived.

I remember reading afterwards of a State representative who was in the state house (Olympia - closer to the epicenter) at the time and how surprised she was at the number of people who prayed out loud to God and how out of character it seemed for certain ones.

I've experienced two, right here in KY! Largest one was 5.2 in 1980.

During the drought of 88 our dug well went dry. I was faced with the dilemma, do I drill a deep well or build a cistern?

I followed a geologist's advice and questioned all my neighbors who had deep wells and cisterns.

Deep wells around in this locale have strong sulfur water.

The two main complaints I got about cisterns were they wished they had built them bigger to hold more water, and, the quake of 1980 had cracked many cisterns in the area.

So, I built a large (11,000 gal) capacity cistern with earthquake resistant steel re-enforced concrete walls (actually i built it like a bank vault).

That was 1988. There has been a smaller (3 point something) quake since then. We still use the cistern, catch rainwater, no problems.

    But earthquakes make me nervous.

Glad you are all ok, RD. There have been reports of at least 2 (mild) earthquakes here in WV this year, and I thought our state was safe from those! I don't know if this is a sign of the end times drawing closer, or if we just have more media coverage nowadays. Sure seems like there is a lot of activity going on lately with the weather and natural phenomenon.

May Be Signs of the Times!

The thought of the end times prophecy always comes to the top of our thoughts when the earthquakes out here, or, anywhere in the country or, world.

There are those (in the church) who will say it is just nature letting loose... but, the Bible tells us there will be, "earthquakes in divers places!" Matthew 24:7, Matthew 24:6-8, Mark 13:8.

It is always Scriptural food for thought...

I am glad to hear you and yours are ok. I am up in Washington State and I read all about this earthquake. It is also very good to hear how you applied what happened with a call to scripture. I have been feeling a bit down lately and for your post on this was a pick me up for the day.
