I think the demon deacons (or is it screamin' deacons) of Wake Forest are the funniest names.

Minor League Baseball is full of odd nicknames. I'll post some when I get a chance. Classic ones!

I don't have any sources with me now, but I have read a few articles about funny, or surprisingly appropriate, team names in Texas. With more than 1000 high schools, I suppose there should be a few.

There is some team called the Fighting Gorillas, but I don't remember where it is. A Port Lavaca school is called the Fighting Sand Crabs. A couple near old oil fields are called the Roughnecks. New Braunfels, in the middle of German settlements, is the Unicorns. And some Catholic school is the Dragon-Slayers.

It's that "suprisingly appropriate" category that I remember best... the Hamlin Pied Pipers, the Farmersville Farmers, the Muleshoe Mules, the Van Vandals, and 2 that leave you cold-- the Frost Polar Bears and the Winters Blizzards.

Elon University in NC is now called The Phoenix. However, I remember when they were called the Fightin' Christians -- they finally changed their name in 1999.

Note -- I have known some deacons to whom the Wake Forest moniker applies.

Let me add a couple to the Baseball list! How 'bout the Greensboro Grasshoppers, or the Hickery(sp?) Crawdads! Sorry, no links.

There is an amateur soccer team in the League of Wales (in Britain) called The New Saints. There are also teams in the same league called NEWI Cefn Druids (can't get much more Welsh than that) and Airbus UK (named after the company they represent).

Not wishing to offend anyone's sensibilities, but I do recall reading about an ice hockey team from Macon GA that was called the Macon Whoopee.
