At the end of every program there is a list of sponsors, mostly private foundations about which I, and I suspect most people, know nothing. It would be interesting to know how much money is tied up in private foundations and the political/social power they have to influence llegislation.

I have in the past googled some of them. They were all left wing groups

The best and most wholesome programming is on PBS.

    Mystery
    Agatha Christie
    Last of the Summer Wine
    Keeping Up Appearances
    Masterpiece Theater
    Nova
    American Masters
    Antiques Roadshow
    Bill Moyers
    Motor Week
    Your Money and Business

    and more .....................

All the Ken Burns specials. Especially the series on the National Parks.

I do not find the soft porn. that is on regular broadcasting and I see much more positive information or Christianity than on regular broadcasting.

Left wing or not the programming is much more wholesome than on regular TV. You do not see the soft porn nor the foul language on PBS that you see in regular commercially aired programs. You should appreciate this ... or do you like soft porn and filthy language in your TV programs?

I decided this reply was not worthy of being published.

I would agree with Crabtownboy. And don't forget This Old House, the recently departed New Yankee Workshop, and The American Experience.

Sometimes I will watch segments of symphonies or musicians playing.

Of course, any time I catch Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, he has a captive audience in me.

I agree with Crabtree, believe it or not. There are a lot of very good quality shows. One of the best musical groups I have seen on PBS is called Celtic Woman, which is basically Irish folk music. The music those women sing with the orchestra is really a treat to listen to. Has anyone else heard them?

I have heard of the Celtic Women: they have quite a following. Not my favorite style but I will listen every now and again.

I like the roadshow. It bores my wife to tears.

If it twernt fer pbs I doubt we'd have a tv - not saying it is all that good, but it is the best there is over the air.

Celtic Woman is a good group, have a couple of their cds.

We watch a lot of the travel shows since that is the closest we well ever get to going anywhere :tongue3: and it is so way more cheaper!

Ask This Old House always says write to us with your questions, so I did and the reply was automated and told me that most questions are never answered due to the volume.

I REALLY wish they would stop telling everyone they don't have commercials however.

I watch PBS a good bit. There are many good shows. "Keeping Up Appearances" is one of my favorites. My wife can't understand why I laugh so much at this show. "Are You Being Served" is mostly Ok until it gets too sexual and I have to turn the channel. Many of the nature programs are good. I really like "This Old House." Many of the musical programs are good too. I can tell that I'm getting older because I even like to watch the reruns of "Laurence Welk." When I was a kid I hated that show. My parents would watch it before "Emergency" came on.

It bugs me to no end when they interrupt a good program for twenty minutes or more to beg for more money. It doesn't make we want to give but only hardens my resolve not too.

Great show! Hyacinth keeps me laughing and I kind of favor Onslo. I watch a lot of PBS. Nova, and Nature is great to watch with my kids. I like Ken Burns documentaries and of course bbc news every morning with Deutch Welle European Journal, and the religious news. I must say not a fan of lawrence welk though there are certain music specials that are nice.

PBS is great stuff. We watch frontline all the time. Love it.

As for the OP why does it always have to be about the political side of things? Can't people who disagree ideologically still collaborate to produce quality programming?

We haven't had public TV in 15 years. In fact, my kids have grown up without a subscription to public television.

We do watch movies and stuff, and Netflix through the Xbox, but it gives me more control over content that way.

Programs can be nice, educational, and wholesome...but the commercials are pretty nasty.

The topic is about public television, as in PBS. Subscription for public television? All you need is some rabbit ears (yes, even with the digital conversion).

Haven't personally seen any inappropriate commercials on PBS.

So you all are pleased that liberals buy decent TV programs for you to watch?

Why aren't there any good right wing sponsored TV networks?

PBS isn't just supported by liberals which I am sure that many do. Most of the programming isn't left leaning. In fact, much of it is apolitical. However, if I am not mistaken, it is also subsidized by our tax dollars.

Where do you get this idea?

40% to 50% of PBS funding is Federal and State tax dollars.

The balance is donations with the greatest contribution coming from individual viewers.
