I would think that a sitting President would have more "class" than to use the "F" bomb during a televised event.

Last night, at the 2010 White House Correspondents Dinner - which was on national television - Obama, in an attempt to poke fun at Joe Biden's slip-of-the-tongue just last month, used that foul four-letter word.

It was bad enough that VP Biden was caught using that word during last month's press conference to announce the passing of the Health Care Reform bill. But, for the POTUS to use that word, even in a funny way, shows just how classless this president is.

The above is MHO, so, I wanted to know what members of this Board think about his intentional use of this word. We can only remember how a ton of young folks started to think that oral s#@ was not really a s@#ual act following President Clinton's public hearings over his illicit relationship with Monica L.

I can't help but wonder how much Obama's use of that word will serve to loosen up the tongue's of this generation of young people? After all, Obama said it, and, it was supposed to be funny... OR, WAS IT???

I'm glad I missed that "tongue malfunction".

Has the POTUS apologized for it? or was it just "laughed away"?

I do not like it when anyone uses this word and I do not like it when anyone uses the S word or a number of other words. It is one of the reasons I do not watch Comedy Central and many programs on regular commercial TV. It seems that, in general, our society accepts off color language and often thinks the use of these words is funny.

I miss the days when public office holders were dignified enough to refrain from profanity.

    And yes, it's a bi-partisan problem.

Heard in my childhood (60 years ago):

"Profanity is the effort of a feeble mind to express itself forcibly."

I saw it attributed to Mormon leader Spencer Kimball, but I think it's older than that.

As a twenty-something public school teacher, I seriously don't think it's going to have any effect. Kids already use this language.

If anything, I would guess it's the other way around. Obama is the product of a culture whose collective tongue has already been loosened.

I generally don't care for excess profanity, but there are bigger issues at stake. Plus, I think our culture had long been too polite, especially the Christian culture in our country. There's stuff in the Bible (plus, some that was softened in translation )that would cause many Christians from previous generations to blush.

So let's worry about the more important issues, including some that have to do with the tongue.

It will have an effect. Clinton's action had an effect. Those who want to pretend it will not are being silly

I agree with your sentiment, but I am not sure what day you are speaking of. Truman used the S word all the time. Johnson's language would have embarrassed a sailor. But, such language is unnecessary.

There is a great story about Truman. He was showing reporters around the rose garden ... the roses were in full bloom. He kept talking about how good manure was for the roses. A lady reporter turned to Bess Truman and said, "Can't he just say fertilizer?"

Bess smiled and replied, "You'd be surprised how long it has taken us to get him to say manure."

    I completely agree.

I do not believe it will have any impact on the electorate at large. If people really cared about such language we would not hear so much of it on TV, talk radio and in the movies.

You know what? That is an excellent point. This president has the disadvantage of the being the first 'real' YouTube president. Can you imagine the record we would have if YouTube had been here since day one?

Do we really think our leaders had a lily white record of pure speech in public?

Admittedly, there have been times that the word has "started" to come out of my mouth and this in front of my children. Their eyes got big in shock because of what “almost” came out of my mouth and then they (my teens) will laugh at me because I stopped in the middle and disguised or stutteringly change it as if I were saying something else and/or express myself differently; they know I have a rough past. Yet, what I value "today" is seen.

I have never heard my kids use this language and I’m proud of them for that. I have not even heard them begin to use it, unlike myself. They say they never use these words and I believe them, otherwise the (old) habit would reveal itself.

What I feel is at stake here is that I am a role model to my children and they see that I will go to extreme to not use such language in front of others and will cover up any slip BECAUSE I do not feel it is appropriate to use. I immediately noticed yesterday when I saw the President use that language and that it was not a slip, he purposely used the word and I think the President of the United States should be a better role model and show more dignity to the office.

People, including children will see what he did, especially now that many will start talking about it and make it even more public. This “purposely” expressed profanity shows a sign of what the President of our country finds acceptable; it was not even motivated by anger, just as a joke. Simply, he has a great responsibility and should show more dignity to the office and maturity in being a role model. Shame on him; he should apologize for the sake of being a bad influence, especially upon the children in this country. I hope this doesn’t become a habit for him.

I bet Andrew Jackson turned the air blue often. His reputation certainly leans heavily that way. His friends almost destroyed the White House celebrating after his swearing in as president.

I don't, for surely none are.

Have you notices that almost all four letter, earthy words in English are Anglo-Saxon in origin.

How many ways can one explain this away...well, let's see!

Everyone's doing it mom! Can't I say profanity too?!

Not his fault...he's just a product of the culture!

Don't focus on this issue guys...jaigner doesn't really have a good excuse for Obama, so he just wants you to ignore this one...

Stupidest comment of the year. Out culture has been too polite? Especially Christian's? Would you have Christian's go around and use this language?

Now it's ok because jaigner thinks that the Bible is vulgur. Will it stop?

Luckily, yes, it will stop after one final deflection....

This Was not Comedy Central !!!

Unfortunately this was not comedy central... and he is the POTUS, speaking at a nationally televised event, yet, for the sake of making "funny" he chose to use this word.

The POTUS should have more class than this, and I thought you'd agree.

    The Media is At Fault...

... this was a nationally televisied event on C-Span. The room was filled with reporters - and their bosses - from all major and cable networks. Yet, only You-tube and Fox covered the less-than classless act on Obama's behalf.

This proves what Hannity has been saying for a long time now: "The media is dead!"

Shame on the networks for not bringing this to their Saturday Night News as main story.

I don't care what Truman said... I'd still be just as disappointed in him, and had I been alive than and had the web, I'd be writing the same things about him.

Obama needs to get his head into his job. A lot of children and young people look up to the president as a role model. A ton of black children look up with pride at Obama. What does thie signal them about using this word freely and publically?

I'm always disappointed when any one chooses to use profanity. And yes, even with the students I teach who I know hear it all the time away from school (and often at).

I personally don't think we can be too polite - we can still call something exactly what it is without lowering our standards.

There is a very simple solution to the Obama and Biden problem. It is called the off button on the TV. I have not listened to a one of their speeches, and could care less what either has to say.

Now this is the kind of thinking that makes home-schooling our children very attractive.

You have just changed what I was told to change when I got saved. Until I was saved if someone upset me or kept running their mouth, I would put them on their rear, I was told that kind of behavior would have to cease.

I don't use the word in my conversing with others at work, church, or at home. If I'm happy or upset, I can tell you how I feel without profanity.

My father would have put we kids into time travel if we used profanity, he would have slapped us into the middle of next week.
