Thanks to Zena's post, in another PM, it is a glaring fact that "Screams-in-your-face" when you stop to think that our Supreme Court is made up of persons from the Catholic and Jewish persuasions. Where are the Evangelicals ???

Is this an intentional "slight", or simply an administrative oversight ???

:godisgood: And, I ask this in all sincerity: Should Christians be picketing in the streets of DC because there are no Christians on the highest court in our land ??? :jesus:

Here is the list of Justices, and their faiths (as noted in a post by Zenas):

So John Paul Stevens is an Evangelical?
When was the last time an Evangelical was on the Court?

Meh, just part of a changing landscape. A good question is that above one, "when was the last time an evangelical was on the Court."

Not a slight at all lower courts have plenty of evangelicals around. I don't think it's that big of a deal.

I'd challenge someone to name a qualified, evangelic jurist. I truly would be curious.

Exactly. There now will be no sogenannte 'Protestants' on the Court. I can't remember when there was a solid, professing, born-again believer in the Court.

I am SO GLAD our forefathers had the amazing wisdom to forbid religious tests for a secular government.

There's a word I've never seen before! I can't seem to find a definition either.
Can you define it for me?

Apologies. I picked it up years ago and liked it. It is German for 'so called.' Not sure I spelled it right.

Thanks - not bad for not typing it out for several years :)

    I think either one works?

Would it really matter anyway? We have so-called evangelicals in the republican party who have been nothing but an embarrassment to Christianity.

I only recall a few phrases from 25 years ago courtesy of Uncle Sam, so we are in the same boat.

"The Bell Curve" noted that Episcopal Christians are over represented on Corporation boards of directors and Fundimentalist Christians are under represented.

There are six Catholic Christians on the Supreme Court. To say there are NO Christians on the Supreme Court is ridiculous.

    Forgive Me, BUT....

... the Catholics I know, don't consider themselves to be born-again Christians. Catholics, usually come to Christ through catechism.

A true Catholic separates their religion from the Evangelicals. If I have misunderstood this, please enlighten me. I may have misunderstood them for the last 55 years. I'm not too old to learn something new.

I don't see any big conspiracies here, and I think it is mostly coincedental. For example, Alito was not Bush's first choice for that positon. He first nominated Harriet Miers, a former Catholic, but who was a member of a large Christian church of the Stone/Campbell tradition at the time of her nomination. Altogether there have been 3 Baptists on the Court. The most recent Baptist was Hugo Black. I think he retired in 1971.

Actually, Justice Stevens may be the most recent Baptist on the Supreme Court.

Here and here are two sources that identify Stevens as a Baptist.

What's with him being known as a "Protestant"?

Hyde Park Baptist Church in Chicago (Northern/American Baptist) also became affiliated with the United Church of Christ in the 1960s and changed its name to Hyde Park Union Church. Perhaps "Protestant" was a simple way to describe this dual alignment?

If folks want to call Stevens a Baptist I suppose that is their right. They could also call him the Hulk while they are at it. But it doesn't make it so.

If this is true it is a perfect example of the unimportance of religious labels on justices. There have not been many more activist and liberal justices in the history of the court.

What I want to know is why are there no:

    Americian Indianians
    Blind
    Under age 35
    Ordained ministers
    Military Veterans
    Naturalized Citizens
    ect, ect, ect

    and why are
    single people under represented
women with small children under represented
those who are obese under represented
    ect, ect, ect

and lets not forget about snake handlers

I am concerned only about one qualification -
fullfill the duties as spelled out in Article III of the US Constitution
