Bible Study Tools

    Can anyone recommend commentaries and such? Some people dislike them, and I have mixed feelings. My own theology is mostly conservative Baptist, if that helps. Also, what do you think about things like the Thompson Chain Reference? (Not interested in the Scofield Reference because of its liberal leanings and promoting the "gap theory").

    Any takers?

    The Tyndale Old and New Testament commentaries form one of the best sets money can buy.

    I would not, not in a million years, rely solely on a study Bible. They do not offer much in the way of context and good exegetical help.

    In any event, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using commentaries. In fact, any serious Bible student should use reliable commentaries. They help us toward faithful interpretation in areas in which our own knowledge is insufficient.

    Huh?

    I'd like something that I can rely on that believes the Bible is the word of God, and not going to give me some kind of nonsense.

    There are many commentaries that believe the Bible to be the Word of God, but come to different conclusions. I think it's good to be challenged with many of those diverse viewpoints.

    One of the most important tools to Bible study is a good book on hermeneautics; the proper attitude to understanding how to interpret scripture. One such book is Grasping God's Word by J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays, Zondervan.

    I use the Wycliffe Bible Commentary. It's conservative and my Baptist pastor recommended it. :)

    I really like the Thompson Chain Reference, it makes it easy to read parallell verses and also to study topics.

    I often check my studies with the "Bible Knowledge Commentary", it is two volumes written by professors from DTS. It useful to compare the results of your own study. Recently I have began also checking with Matthew Pooles commentary to see how they read the Bible in the old days.

    For deeper studies a commentary for each individual book would be useful. I am fond of John MacArthurs New Testaments Commentaries, at the moment I am reading his two volumes on Romans. I here that Kistemakers New Testament Commentery set is used by many (it is from a reformed perspective).

    I think it would be valuable for you to read the chapter "Study Tools for Expository Preaching" by James F. Stitzinger in John MacArthurs book "Preaching" from the MacArhtur Pastor´s Library.

    John R. Kohlenberger III has made a good overview of Study Bibles.

    Some of those sound expensive, but I've seen Thompson Chain References at around $50 USD. And I cannot afford some seven-volume commentary. I think I may invest in some of those (if available) for my Bible software. As much as I like books, I am limited in shelf space in this apartment.

    The very best NT commentary I have read is by R. C. H. Lenski. He is Lutheran but presents all sides (Usually disagrees with Calvin). CBD carries it, I think.

    Wycliffe Bible Commentary

    I ran across a Wycliffe Bible Commentary at yard sale on Saturday. Appeared to have never been used! Cost $1.00!!!
