    Fallout from the Spill

Our new Louisiana poll has a lot of data points to show how unhappy voters in the state are with Barack Obama's handling of the oil spill but one perhaps sums it up better than anything else- a majority of voters there think George W. Bush did a better job with Katrina than Obama's done dealing with the spill.

50% of voters in the state, even including 31% of Democrats, give Bush higher marks on that question compared to 35% who pick Obama.

If I recall correctly, storms such as hurricanes the governor is to take the lead and ask for help and oil spills the president takes the leak according to our laws.

This president has done nothing at all to stem the flow of oil from the ruptured rig.

Instead, he is intent on using this tradgedy to advance his energy tax agenda.

What do you think the President should have done?

How about accepting the assistance that was offered by foreign countries to capture the oil out at the rig before it spread for one?

That is a very good idea. As many foreign countries as we have helped over the years, why not ask for help? I cannot remember the country, but isn't Israel very good at capping wells on land. They may have had some ideas.

What the President should have done, or the BP hierarchy done, is lead, which neither has. From the first day, it was their job to figure out the problem and fix it. But actually, the last fifty some odd days has been spent arguing amongst different agencies, companies, and levels of government on who is going to do what, and who is in charge. In the mean time, we have 50+ days of a disaster waiting on governmental and BP inefficiency.

Instead of Congress in all their wisdom spending an entire day with executives lined up before their committee of thieves, worrying about why they had the word "walrus" in their emergency plans for the Gulf, the time could have been better spent with those executives brain storming ideas about how to stop the leak.

Provided some leadership. Of course, there is virtually no leadership in Washington these days, either from the President or Congress. Instead, he ignored it for a long time, and then when he finally got involved it was to say that he was going to find someone's rear end to kick, letting his potty mouth get away from him again. At that point noone cared who was at fault, people were a lot more concerned with capping and cleanup, as well as the impact to the environment and jobs.

Why can't we elect a president that can provide leadership? We haven't had one of those in over 20 years. Presidents like FDR, JFK, and Reagan could provide leadership when the country needed it. Like or hate their policies, they had more leadership in their pinky fingers than any of the last 4 presidents have had.

That is rather vague. What specifically should the President do to fulfill this? This was a mess created by the righties much beloved private enterprise. This is what happens when regulatory bodies are run by the businesses they regulate. Can you say "fox in the henhouse"? This points out the real role of government is to set in place regulations that could help prevent such catastrophies, rather than reacting to them. The US government is not an oil company. The expertise lies with BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil, and the rest. Where our government failed us is in neglecting to put real regulations and standards in place in the beginning.

For starters President Obama could have allowed the state and local governments be more proactive in protecting their shore lines. President Obama should have cut some of the red tape from the beginning. For some shore lines it's too little/too late.

After the Exxon Valdez mess, the law changes from the Federal government acting as it does on on storms. On storms the state government leads the way, federal government acts after the state government ask for help, on oil spills the federal government takes the leadership roll.

Many will recall on the Ketrina deal they were all over our president for waiting to be asked, not responding quick enough. On this oil blow out many are saying our president acted correctly. But if I recall correctly on Ketrina he did act in accord with the law, and our president didn't act quick in accord with the law on the subject.

    It is still Bush's fault?

In March the Obama Administration announced their new super-duper Comprehensive Energy Strategy. In Part:
"Over the last year, under the leadership of Secretary Salazar, the Administration has worked to reevaluate previous decisions in an effort to set oil and gas drilling policies on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) that will help reduce our dependence on foreign oil, create jobs, and take environmental risks and responsibilities into account...Our strategy calls for developing new areas offshore, exploring frontier areas, and protecting places that are too special to drill. By providing order and certainty to offshore exploration and development and ensuring we are drilling in the right ways and the right places, we are opening a new chapter for balanced and responsible oil and gas development here at home."

After studying drilling for a year and writing up new policy, they were caught totally flat-footed.

What specifically should the President have done? Well, I've already said what he should have done and there is nothing vague about it. He should have been a leader. He should have taken the bull by the horns instead of ignoring the issue altogether for such a long time. First things first is to actually address the issue. Secondly, get involved. Find out what is going on, what BP plans to do, if anyone in the world knows how to fix the problem, etc. It was clear from early on that BP had no idea how to cap the break from the fact that their engineers were theorizing solutions. Try to get things coordinated between the various parties involved. Let the American citizens know you care, you are concerned, and you are desiring a fast resolution to the problem.

Obama did the opposite of all of that. He was silent, distant, and when he finally did get involved it was to tell us he was going to kick someone's backside. What? Give me a break, Mr. President. You were absent at the wheel when the country needed you. You like getting involved in everything except where you are truly needed. He may not have had a solution, but he could have gotten involved immediately and figured out that BP didn't either, and started hunting down someone who did have one.

I know the Obama-haters here are having a field day, but please stop being a hypocrite!

You preach that the government is corrupt and cannot possibly do anything right, except operate a military. Now, you complain that the government isn't doing enough to stop this oil.

The truth is that no one knows a way to stop this rupture immediately. The pressures are too great and the problem is too deep. If any engineering company finds a way to cap it they will be setup in business for ever. It will probably not be stopped until the relief well or wells are complete.

I didn't say I expected the federal government to step in and stop the oil leak. I said I expected the leader of the country to actually be a leader instead of ignoring the problem for a while, and then finally step in only to announce that he would kick someone's rear end. Obama did a poor job of being a leader during this situation, and a far worse job than Bush did during Katrina. I just wish the country could elect a good leader, it has been a while since we had one.

Obama didn't cause this oil spill any more than Bush caused Katrina. The reason the government in both instances appeared stunned is because of the enormity of both disasters. Sometimes the solution isn't as immediate as we would like it to be.

Nope. You are misrepresenting our argument. The government refused help from other nations. It refused to let the states deal with it themselves. It has regulated us right into this, and now you say it's the only way out. I say get the government out of it, and let the people who have the technology go in. Let the governors be in charge of their own state. We do not needthis inexperienxced bully in there. Chicago thugs rarely have any experience with major oil spills. His pathetic speech last night only sealed the deal. Only a fool would say he has done anything but make this disaster worse.

Chicago thugs, like Obama, are most effective as "leaders" when stealing the assets of companies and the hardearned money of working people, or extorting $20 billion from BP.

Leadership to actually fix the problem is beyond their understanding.

Obama is an expert extortionist and thief. It's what he has experience at, not leadership
