WV Senator Byrd Dead at age 92

One thing I liked about Sen. Byrd was his willingness to support the power of the Congress against the executive branch.

 

Spoken on the Senate floor, May 12, 2005:

 

And he said he was supporting Obama because Obama is a Christian.

Byrd said:

Byrd traveled far in his thinking from the days he was a member of the KKK.

There were things I liked about him and things I did not care for. I really hate what has been done to the WV mountains by strip mining ... which he always favored.

On the positive side he did much to help the people of his state economically.

I also find it a bit humorous that he was able to have the Coast Guard offices moved to WV. Well, after all WV has such a long coast line. :laugh:

May his soul rest in peace and may he have lots of fun in heaven!

 

And at the same time he could always be counted on for his pro-abortion vote.

 

Did he not also have early ties to the Klan in addition to supporting the outright murder of unborn children?

 

I'll be sure to play Randy Newman's "Rednecks" in his honor.

I hear the Grand Wizard has ordered all Klan robes to be flown at half staff.

 

It was the Klan that first suggested to him that he should run for office.

 

After living here in WV the last 17, and my dh living here his whole life, I can say:

Sen. Byrd got elected time and time again because he was a democrat, and people here vote democrat because "that's the way they've always done it."

Sen. Byrd was an eloquent spokesman.

He did manage to get his name plastered all over the state--highways, bridges, you name it, you'll find his name everywhere. I don't think he quite deserves ALL that credit. There are other people behind the scenes we never hear of or see.

Contrary to popular opinion, he was NOT the greatest thing in WV since sliced bread. Otherwise, this state would not be at the top of the list in all the "bad" things and at the bottom of the list for all the "good" things.
Nationally, WV is last in many areas just next to Mississippi.

No matter how many times I contacted him with my opinion on a particular issue, he never failed to send me a letter in reply. I didn't always agree with his response, but at least he was organized and professional in that area and that's a whole lot more than I can say for any other politician in WV.

 

Byrd was also an Exalted Cyclops and founder of his own local branch of the Klan.

I would call that more than just "ties" to the Klan.

 

I find it sad that any state would vote for someone in their nineties, in terrible health, to "serve" in congress.

That's a terrible indictment of the majority of voting West Virginians.

 

My condolences to Senator Byrd's family and friends on their loss. May God comfort them.

I think what Senator Byrd will be most remembered for was his ability to take money from folks in the other 49 states and have it given to his state of West Virginia.

 

Yes, it is, and it's very frustrating to those of us who are tired of the same old backroom politics.

 

My Opinion Of Senator Byrd...

For Senator Byrd's family and friends, I offer my prayers and ask that they have the peace and comfort of the Lord and His presence as they navigate through this time of personal loss.

In regard to the question asked on this post: He over-stayed his time in office.

There needs to be something done about these life time career politicians. At 92, and in failing health, if Bryd wouldn't offer to step down, the party should have demanded that he retire, maybe 2, or, 3 terms ago.

And, the fear of the DNC is beginning to show its "ugly little head!" With November right around the corner, the conern of losing seats to the conservative right was even more evident with the decision of the WV Governor to appoint a replacement, and not hold an open election.

What they'll do to hold unto a precious seat in the Senate, and its vote.

What, though? If WV stupidly elects a 300 year-old senator too sick to serve, it's their own doggone fault. There's nothing that can be done Constitutionally...and I don't want to change the Constitution based on one state's irresponsibility. Besides...who gets the power to override the wishes of the WV people? The Democrats? The Senate leadership? You end up with a train wreck on your hands.

Maybe that's a good plan: every state should elect a 90+ year-old, half-senile, terminally ill senator (or two). They do less damage to our country when they don't show up. Of course, then, Obama would fill in the power vacuum...so maybe not.

Byrd's seat will be filled by WV democratic leadership, and ilt will likely be corrupt.

What will be really interesting is seeing if the people of West Virginia have learned anything in this process. I hope they have. If not...well, we usually get the kind of representation we deserve.

(And before I'm accused of hating on WV...I castigated my home state (Alabama) pretty hard for electing a goofball who gauges the wind of opinion first, then forms his "convictions" based on that.)

Doggone, am I ever sick of brain-dead, spineless, heartless, gutless, cranio-rectally inverted politicians.

 

I voted against Byrd everytime I could, but I have to admit.. for an old man past his prime he kept bringing home the bacon! LOL

 

Sadest day in America since the death of the beloved Ted Kennedy.

 

Of course, Byrd stole money from the citizenry of the other 49 states to give to WV...

To be fair, it isn't just Byrd...but if we don't quit stealing from each other, and from our kids' future, there won't be any bacon anywhere, for anyone.

 

That is why almost every citizen says that congress is corrupt yet almost always support their congressman at the ballot box.

This is not directed at TinyTim as he already stated a No vote for Byrd, just voters in general.
