My current vehicle, a '93 Ford Escort two door, has over 350,000 on it right now... and I add to it daily. ;)

We have two cars -- a Volvo S80 and a Ford Explorer -- that have more than 100,000 on them. Actually, the Ford is holding up better than the Volvo and it looks practically new. We normally keep our cars for a long time - though I've never gotten to the 200,000 mark.

I honestly have no idea. Right now my '02 Grand Caravan has 74,000 and my husband's '99 Maxima has 69,000. Since we have another child starting college meaning we'll have two in college, I'd like to keep my van going as long as possible. I'm sure I can get at least 5 more years on it and it's still looking good, and running pretty well so I don't mind.

I'm currently driving the best car I've ever owned. A 1997 Saturn SL...pushing 190K, get 32 MPG in normal driving (up to 40 (!) on the road when the A/C doesn't have to run)...and the doggone thing just won't tear up.

Outside of an A/C repair 4 years ago, I've had one repair bill over $300 (shift cable, 5 years ago). Everything else has been extremely minor and/or cheap. And durable! I've got about 60K on my current brakes, and there's at least a year left on the pads. Of course, the car weighs about 17 pounds, so that would figure...

Of course, part of it is that I maintain the car. I don't let stuff go that could develop into big stuff.

Cars may be more "cookie cutter" than in earlier days, but they go a heckuva lot longer. A 200K car was a freak of nature 30 years ago.

I had 168,000 on my '95 Subaru Legacy when I sold it. Right now, my 92 Legacy has 89,000 and my wife's 98 Legacy has 116,000. Also had an '88 Dodge Shadow that I bought new. It went to the junk yard with 140,000 on it.

BTW, the choice "less than 200,000 miles or more" would apply to every car that has ever existed. :)

That's good to hear. My daughter drives a Saturn -- only about 10,000 miles. Hopefully, it will serve her well -- through college and beyond.

I will say that at about 120K, my saturn uses some oil. About 1500 miles per quart (that's about every five fill-ups...I go around 300 miles on my puny little 10-gallon gas tank).

If I did what many folks do--never check the oil--I'd probably already have said goodbye to my car. FoS, hope your daughter knows to check the oil (though as new as it is, she may be fine...but neglecting it is a bad habit to get into).

She's 19. Aren't you a youth pastor?? Looks like dad will be the one checking out the oil and other maintenance.

um, the correct response would be to puff the chest out, and say: "Well, my daugher is gonna learn how to rebuild her own engine. In the dark. With it running."

(meanwhile, we quietly pay a mechanic under the table to fix the damage caused when she pours brake fluid into the engine block)

Hey now! My 18 year old took "car care" in school and learned how to not only change the oil but to do brakes! She's going to do my other daughter's brakes under the guidance of dad, who used to always do our brakes. She learned a lot in that class! I wish my other daughter had taken it but the class was full in the one semester she could have done it.

I've had two vehicles with over 250,000 miles - both Ebay finds. My 1990 Blazer hit 253,000 and the 98 Buick Regal went 275,000. Madre's '95 Grand Marquis has 145,000. My 93 Fleetwood just turned 88,000.
