First was the startling accusation by Attorney General Eric Holder, days after Barack Obama was inaugurated in a gusher of good feeling, that we are all "a nation of cowards" when it comes to facing issues of race.

A real icebreaker for a national conversation.

Second was the instantaneous verdict of the president, when asked about the arrest of Harvard's Henry Louis Gates by Cambridge cop Sgt. James Crowley. With no knowledge of what happened, Obama blurted out that the cops had "acted stupidly."

It took a White House beer summit to detoxify that one.

A third was the revelation that Obama's first Supreme Court nominee, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, the "wise Latina" herself, had gone to extremes to see that the case of Frank Ricci and the New Haven, Conn., firefighters never got to the Supreme Court. Ricci and co-defendants had been denied promotions they had won in competitive exams solely because they were white and no black firemen had done as well.

The fourth was the Justice Department's dropping of charges against members of the New Black Panther Party, whose intimidation of voters in Philadelphia had been captured on tape.

When a department official resigned in protest and went to the Civil Rights Commission to accuse officials at Justice of ordering staff attorneys not to pursue such cases, that explosive charge, too, was ignored by Justice.

    SNIP

Opposition to affirmative action is racist. Supporting the tea party gives aid and comfort to racists. Opposing health care puts you in league with folks who used racial slurs on Rep. John Lewis. To raise the issue of the New Black Panther Party is to play the race card.

One understands the bitterness of tea-party folks who carry signs that read: "What difference does it make what this placard says? You'll call it racist anyway."

    >we are all "a nation of cowards" when it comes to facing issues of race.

It is true. No one on this list or anyplace else ever wants to discuss the end of WASP domination in the world and the US because we would have to admit that US white Christian culture is on a down hill slide.

Could this be why there is no discussion here? ;)

[I saw this non-copyrighted item about Obama on the web!]

    OBAMA AVOIDS BIBLE VERSES

Here are some Bible verses that Pres. Obama avoids:
Proverbs 19:10 (NIV): "It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury - how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!"
Also Proverbs 30:22 (NIV) which says that the earth cannot bear up under "a servant who becomes king."
And Ecclesiastes 5:2-3 (KJV) advises: "let thy words be few...a fool's voice is known by multitude of words."
Although Obama is not descended from slaves, he may feel that he's destined to become a black-slavery avenger.
Or maybe an enslaver of all free citizens!
For the brain-dead, pro-murder politicians in Washington DeCeased who fix Social Security by voting to abort millions who otherwise could be paying into SS (!), I have two pro-life slogans I thought up:
"Unborn babies should have the right to keep and bear arms - and legs and ears and eyes etc.!" and "Unborn babies should have the same right to be born alive that abortionists had!"
For more insights, Google "Obama Supports Public Depravity" and "Mayor 'Napoleon' Bloomberg."
BREAKING NEWS about Obama's re-election promise:
The promise of "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage" can be traced to Hoover's 1928 Presidential campaign.
Well, Obama has twisted these words and is promising that if he's re-elected there will be "a chick in every car and some pot in every garage!"

Remember back to 2004? The media was quick to fawn over Obama’s assertion that he believed there was not a “white America” nor a “black America” but only the “United States of America.” They hailed his rise to power as the beginning of a new post-racial age. They told us the racial politics of the past were dead.

They were wrong. Not only has Obama’s regime not heralded a post-racial political environment, but Obama, either personally or through administration officials, has repeatedly and, er, “stupidly” used the race card as a cudgel to divide us. He and his allies, most recently the NAACP, have created one of the most racially divisive atmospheres in decades.

Sounds almost like a rallying "solidarity" cry to me.
However, the instances they're complaining about do not directly place it in terms of "black vs white" like this is doing. Some leader calling something or even someone racist (Whch is what most of these complaints revolve around) we can argue as to whether it is legitimate, but that is a far cry from talking about "racial consciousness", or "[our race] feels...", and the constant "they're out to get us; they're turning the tables on us" rhetoric I am seeing in each of these topics.
So for whatever racial hypocrisy or stupid statements Sherrod, Obama, and all the other black leaders, Democrats and other liberals may engage in, if someone responds with this "white this", and "white that" versus "black this" and "black that", you're fanning the flames and division, and only multiplying the other side's wrong. So if racial harmony does dissolve, it won't be only their fault.

I think a lot of people's jumpiness on race is because of all the indirect blame placed on minorities in the last 30 years of political campaigning, especially revolving around crime (which has sort of died down more recently) and especially "taxes spent on welfare" (which continues to this day).
Hence, the whole "grasshopper" debate, with the qualification "don't quote us on saying those are minorities; but hey, the statistics do suggest that". (Here, BTW, FTR, is the 1994 original UNEDITED version of the Grasshopper story by its author, where you can see "GB" is meant to represent "CP". http://www.warroom.com/antgh.php)

Hence, this whole "small government" talk becomes infused with race, for the primary fault of this "large government" seems to be these "social programs". (Again, I never see them blame the $400 screwdriver contracts, the large airports they built in the middle of nowhere, the fancy new office towers they build, pork barrell projects that favor the rich or suburban middle class, and all the other waste we have heard of).
Then, to add to this, the conservatives loudly try to call the Democrats out on "using race" to justify these "programs" and also gain votes. This is where a lot of the race rhetoric on their side is heard. This is what all of these topics raised here have been on.

Surely; that is just stating objective fact, isn't it? Yet who's directly mentioning race frequently, now? (I had often thought that it looked like this supposed race "backlash" was being used as a pawn in their war against the Democrats, and that they should really look for another issue).
Liberals had long said that class; irrespective of race, is the real issue and that we should thus move on past race; but the conservatives don't want to see a "class card" either, which they view as "Marxist"; so they quickly rebuke that, and go back to scolding the Democrats on race.

So again, the entire discussion is by now increasingly revolving around race. So then, the Democrats and especially black leaders thus come to suspect the whole premise as racist. Then, the conservatives react, accusing the other side of keeping the race issue alive and unfairly accusing them, as if out of nowhere.
So it's a cycle. Conservatives accuse liberals of using race to raise taxes and gain votes, and then the liberals call this rhetoric and the movements that embody it "racist", and then the conservatives now have another "race card" to complain about and blame the liberals for destroyign race relations.

Race cards are wrong, and class cards are wrong. What is the problem, then? It's just those evil Democrats and the vast hordes of lazy grasshoppers they are trying to give a free ride at our expense. That seems to be all conservatives want to hear, as "the facts". Everything else is "excuses", "rejecting right and wrong", etc.

Yet that whole "reverse racial" premise collapses (like a house of cards!:tongue3:) if it's not accurate that all the "high taxes" are going to race-based programs.

The demand for smaller government in itself is not racist, but I think it's time people stop blaming almost solely, "social programs" for large government and high taxes, and also assess whether taxes are really the primary problem in this country to begin with. We've seen more than ever the corruption of the corporate world and global finance that has a lot of financial power in the country. Buchanan's quote of Brownstein says those are becoming distrusted too, yet in these debates, they always get a pass (or the "liberal government" blamed for it), and the finger is turned back to the "grasshoppers" and the liberals.

As I have said, BOTH sides need to refocus and change their tactics and rhetoric for this race thing to die down. There is never any one side who is all right and innocent, while the other side is all to blame for everything. It was not even like that in scripture (at least not among men).

"For though the black community remains solidly behind Obama and the white majority is shrinking toward minority status by 2042 or 2050, depending on which Census survey one uses, whites in America still outnumber blacks five to one. And if forced constantly to come down on one side or the other of a racial divide, most folks will wind up with their own."

Agree 100%. But I think by 2050 most Americans will classify themselves as "mixed."

Maybe at that time, the majority of Americans can join the NAACP, and they'll cease to be such a racist organization.

Depends. A significant number of Americans would classify themselves as "horseshoe crabs" if it meant getting "free" money from the government.

That simply isn't true. According to the Bureau, white people will make up 74% of the population in 2050, down from 80% in 2000.

 Nope. They'll just be the instigators. Then "everyone" can be at fault and racist democrats and liberals can try to dodge accountability once again. It's a way of life.

Eric, I will agree with you that for too long, many conservatives have not kept their house in order with regards to being accountable and transparent for spending with regards particularly to defense. And all of our government is responsible for the short-sightedness that has led to a Ponzi-scheme type of situation we're in with SS and Medicaire/Medicaid. Honestly, I don't see a way out of it without a lot of pain. And whoever is willing to begin the fix will be run out of office...because it will be intensely unpopular. And I'm afraid that on either side of the aisle, we don't raise folks with enough principles anymore. Most just want the re-election.

Because of the leftward shift in congress in the last election, though...there's been an exponential growth in government spending and involvement at all levels. And because the "since you're against this program, you must be racist" argument is the most bombastic of the arguments (and frankly, for various reasons, is very likely to be picked up by the media), I think we're hearing it a bit more (just MHO, no data). Of course there will be a backlash against such arguments. There should be.

We're in a huge hole; but for goodness' sake...would somebody please tell our elected folks to quit digging?!?
