Too vague to answer. Is tithing doable today? yes
Is tithing require for salvation? No
Is tithing a good practice? yes
Does scripture set forth tithing as a new testament command? No

What I give has to come from the heart. If it is a tithe, then that is good. If it is more, then that is good. If it is less, then that is good.

No. Tithing as a commandment is part of the law.

Did Christ ask that we give 10% of our commitment to him, or was it more than a 10% commitment?

Do you love the Lord less than 10%? Do you love your fellow Christians and your fellow church members less than 10%?

Many years ago I heard a preacher say, "If you want to find out who is really a Christian pass a law that says any person who declares himself/herself a Christian will pay 85% of everything they earn in taxes. See how many Americans flee from Christ and the church in a heartbeat. For most Americans the all mighty dollar is their god.

I think tithing is a great practice and while it is not a law for us, it is a good guideline and I don't know of many who have done it and suffered unduly. We don't make very much but we do tithe.

I know a pastor that has mentioned every week for the last month that not tithing is 'the only sin that God will kill you for' and that 'if rob God, then I don't trust you with anything' and other such manipulative statements.

Poor guy never read I Corinthians - not of constraint, but willingly; as he purposeth in his heart; a cheerful giver.

BTW - I give tithe. If the lost Jews could give 10%, then I can do at least that much to fulfill my obligations to support the ministry (II Cor. 9).

This is basically where I stand. Usually I try to give more than just a tithe, but that's just me. OTOH, I'm not going to condemn someone who believes differently about tithing. What I give is between God and me. Likewise, what someone else gives is between God and that person.

100% of everything I have my Father in heaven has given to me.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Because He has made me to partake of His nature through the new birth I want/love to give and share what I have with others.

2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

The unregenerate are commanded to tithe under the law.

The children of God have no such command or restraint.

2 Corinthians 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

You can give it all if it makes you happy.
    Jesus did.

Luke 9:58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

Besides, there is only one thing that I have that pleases God...

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

I hear regularly Malachi 3:8 quoted from the pulpit "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings". Or a cliché "tithe is what you owe and an offering is a seed you sow".

We were taught tithing as the minimum we can offer to the Lord's house, and then the offering.

I never, however, asked any family to sacrifice their debt load for the church plate.

Just keep the church expenses within reason and not all the garbage of to-day.

    Cheers,

    Jim

A tithe of the spoils of war is not equivalent to the modern concept of 10% of all income, IMO.

    1 Cor 16 +
    2 Cor 9

The NT teaches freewill offerings/giving with some guidelines; out of love, not by obligation, he that sows sparingly..etc

I have heard a lot of mixed messages from sermons preaching that christians ought to keep the tithe from the very chapters above + Malachi 3 and Gen 14. IMHO that is merely attempting to make a case for tithing rather than acknowledge the differences between the new and old covenants...

    2 Questions related to tithing:

    1. Is all of the tithe to go exclusively to one's local church (i.e., "storehouse tithing")?

    2. Is the tithe computed only on one's salary or should it also include such things as profits made on investments (stocks, bonds, etc.) as well?

    What think ye?

    1. When I used to tithe, I was taught the tithe was to go to the work of God, particularly the church you are a member of. I think the regulations of modern tithing are just based on principles so maybe one can take some theological liberty and make your own judgment; if you are giving back to God HIS tenth how would that be accomplished??

    2. If you are going to follow the command to tithe I would think one needs to give from ALL their increase. Can't imagine throwing in the offering tithes of crops and animals (the firstborn) but you never know. I'm joking of course...

If one were to only give ten percent it would be nothing for some and a lot for others.

    For example:

One who makes 1000 per month would have $900 left over to live on.
One who makes 10000 per month would have $9000 left over to live on.

There is a huge difference. When did God say the rich were to keep any more than the poor did for themselves?

The way I see it is that to live the Christian life is to level the field by the rich giving more so the poor could live better. The status of the rich lowered and the poor raised.

He also circumcised before the law was given. Yet, circumcision was also done away with.

Hmmm...I didn't realize that the entire Old Testament had been done away with at the consecration of the New Covenant.

    Interesting

Interesting how people want to use Abraham to support a new testament tithe but do not make mention of Joses in Acts 4:36. If Abraham can be used to say we must give 10%, why isn't Joses used to to say we must give 100%??

Not according to Jesus in Mt 5:17-19, "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

However there are some dispensationalists who seem to think so.
