While Obama preaches sacrifice, his family frolics in Spain

PETER NICHOLAS AND KATHERINE SKIBA, WASHINGTON
    August 8, 2010

AS THE US economy endures high unemployment and a jittery stock market, President Barack Obama has preached sacrifice and fiscal discipline. But the pictures coming out of a sun-splashed Spanish resort may be sending a different message.

First lady Michelle Obama is in the midst of a five-day trip to a luxury resort along with a handful of friends, her younger daughter, aides and Secret Service. Her office said the Obamas would pay for personal expenses, but would not reveal the taxpayer cost for the government employees.

Case in point to something I just said in the other thread.

    In your own immortal words:
This is just what the rich and famous do, both government and private. If someone made that complaint about a private executive, you would just reiterate your little mantra, above. But government does the same thing.
I certainly don't think it's right, but that's the mindset in this culture. Right and left.

It's getting to be a habit.

When private executives do it they aren't normally using taxpayer money.

I don't know if you have noticed or not but we have a serious Federal budget problem.

Trolling is full time work. Leaves little time for noticing minor details like that.

Seems to me the only people who have a problem with this are those on the outlook for dirt on the President and his family.

I saw this on Drudge yesterday and it turned my stomach. I wonder how much her daily protection costs? This is part of being in the first family. Why criticize these people for this? It is awfully nit-picky.

I also notice Drudge has posted a number of links about how the President is "home alone" while his family is on holiday. That is ridiculous and the insinuation is mean spirited. Have none of us had our spouse and children go away separately because they aren't bound to the same work schedule as us? Seriously?

    This whole scrutinizing is ridiculous.

Why does the truth routinely "turn your stomach'?

Would you rather we not know how much this extravagant vacation costs us?

I was going to add the bailouts as the example. And just how their lifestyles increase as prices do at the same time. That's not as direct as taxes, but it is something that is being ignored, or blamed only on taxes and other factors.

But I certainly don't defend the president on that. (The article points out that the Obamas would pay for personal expenses, but would not reveal the taxpayer cost for the government employees, and the question of why foreign and not a US vacation). Again, that's just the mindset on that level. They feel they "earned" it from climbing up to the position of their title. (The same argument used in the private sector). People on that level don't care where the money comes from.
    Oh, so now, trolling.

I simply did what you do in every thread. I even used your own words! (And you certainly don't notice details, such as something not said).

Amazing how people think they are so much in the "truth" that they can criticize every behavior in others they have mastered themselves.

Meaning, of course, that you are not interested in the fact that Michelle Obama's extravagant vacation is funded mostly by the taxpayers.

Only commenting that "that's what the rich and famous do". Compartmentalization helps your avoid seeing facts as truth. And truth is relative to you.

You seem to be most interested in following me from thread to thread with personal insults. Since you're acting like a troll, I have to conclude you are one. SWince that's your goal, the subject matter of the thread doesn't make much difference.

Bingo - I have no problem with the president's family going on holiday. It has always happened and always will.

The probelm is that it has been one long endless holiday.

Michelle seems to be taking the attitude of "Let them eat cake."

I didn't realise that. Have you seen any comparisons to the Obamas holidays in relation to other president's families?

    Neither do I.

It's where they choose to go and how much of our money they spend that matters.

An expensive vacation in Spain this year, and last year in Britain and France, with so many states and cities suffering because of decreased tourism in these hard economic times, seems to make a choice of California, Florida , or just about anyplace in this country a much better choice.

It is an indication of the elitist attitude of the Obamas, in general, and a direct refutation of the phony populist image they like to project.

This I would agree with - it does point out the hypocrisy.

However, as far as the cost of the holiday, when we look at the actual expense, I have a feeling that there are toilet seats that cost more than this trip to Spain.

No way to tell. They won't divulge how much taxpayer money is spent.

I have been away for a few years, but I just don't remember people wanting to know the costs for former presidents holidays.

I could be wrong on this one, but it seems like the American right is demanding a lot more out of this guy that the last few.

The "American right" knows what Obama seems to have forgotten if he ever knew... that extravagant personal European vacations are out of line in economic times like these.

The American left, in contrast, doesn't care how much the Obamas spend or what they do. It is the obligation of the political opposition to point these things out and they are not always wrong.

I might remind you that the "American left" castigated George Bush for going home for vacation, let alone to Spain or France. They couldn't complain about any outlandish or extravagant expenses, so they just complained because he went on vacation at all.

Bush went home to Crawford, Texas for vactions.

Michelle isn't the President - she doesn't have an offical position - wasn't elected to anything. Why are taxpayers footing the bill for $2,500 a night rooms for her and her closest 30 or 40 friends when the actual President isn't even there?

If I recall correctly, many in the news were saying it was costing the government to much money and him to much time to going to Crawford, Texas, he should stay in DC and do his job. And on the other hand they were up set with Bush for not having enough big dinners. I guess they were more into eating what ever they do in those deals in DC and didn't care for Texas Bar B Q.

$2,500 a night?!? Boy, that sure tops the cost of the Designer Sneakers she bought & wore last year! Guess she feels that there will be poor always.
