    Has anyone ever heard of him? I was listening to a radio program that was airing one of his lectures on revival . I was astounded of the moral situation in the world in the 18th and 19th centuries. He claims that Christianity was in a downward spiral in the late 1700's until revival broke out worldwide. I had always assumed America was a strongly Christian. I can't do him justice so please if you have the time listen to a few of his lectures on the linked website. If you do please reply if this surprises you.

    I thought he had died in the maybe mid 1980's. He was well know in the history of revival in the church in this country and around the world. Quite a teacher.

    Recently read a book written by an Anglican preacher in the 1700's. i may be a bit of a prude but I would not pass the book on to others due to a couple pieces of subject matter/wording. Could not believe what I was reading.

    Is this a different Orr from James Orr who was one of the editors of The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia ?

    The website I beleive said he did pass away some time ago. The lecture I listened to was from 1981.

    Excentric---what was it in this book that you couldn't believe. Please can you let me know what book it was, I would interested in acquiring it. Thanks

    It was hard for me to listen to Orr say that most of America and Europe was without Christ to a large percentage. I had always been taught that the formers of our Constitution were almost all Christian and that all of our early Universities were formed for Christian education. And to see Orr state that just a few years after this we see this great return to immorality is mind boggling to me.

    I was taught much the same as Orr said. Their were many Christians but not as many as some are willing to say there was. Jefferson wasn't or that is what I was taught. He would have been much like Bill Clinton of our day, a good speaker, easy to like, but you might not feel at ease leaving your wife or daughter with him ( Clinton joined a Baptist church in Little Rock to get reelected governor). Now there has to be some balance too, Thomas Payne when he died they had a hard time finding a place to bury him.

    History is a lot like the good old days, Sleeping on the back porch because it was to hot to sleep inside, or trying to cook on a wood burning stove, it got hot in the house, or the great walk to the out house or the 10 to 12 hour days 6 days a week at work, then add on all the work on the farm. Everything needs a little balance to be truthful.

    The condition of "Christian America" after the first wave of religious fervor was in a sad state of affairs. Hence the great revivals in American church history.

    Note that the once zealous pious Puritans founded Harvard as a training school for pastors (as was Yale, Princeton, Brown, etc., virtually all very early American colleges were for religious training) but they ended up as Unitarian Universalists, a legacy we still deal with today.

    American Christianity has gone through waves of fervor and apostasy.
