I just returned from vacation last night. While vacationing I had some delicious ostrich meat.It was my first time.I thought it was very tasty. I have learned it has less fat, less calories, less cholest, and more iron than most popular meats.

The restaurant also had buffalo and caribou on the menu. I think I had a bison-burger years ago. I have never eaten venison yet, but folks ate that meat more than beef, and chicken centuries ago.

I love beef, chicken and fish. However, I think I've been missing out all these years on these other products. I don't think I'm turning into Ted Nugent though.

How about you? Have any of you eaten ostrich before? What about caribou, bison or venison?

Added comment;I was specifically identifying deer meat with the use of the term venison.

My hubby is a deer hunter, so I've had my share of venison. I prefer beef, but will eat venison when we have it. I had a bison burger at Ted's Montana Grill, and did not like the taste at all. To me, it tasted like old hamburger. bleck. I had reindeer sausage in Alaska once. I'm not sure if that was caribou or not, but it was pretty good!

I've never had ostrich, but I"d like to try it. How does it compare with chicken and turkey?

I've eaten ostrich and thought it was horrible! Rippon, how was your ostrich prepared? I just had ostrich jerky. Some other things I've eaten:

    bison--too tough and wild
    wild boar--not bad
    alligator--delicious
    kangaroo--loved it!
    venison--love it
    wild pheasant--very good
quail--it was ok but not as good as pheasant
    frog legs--gag

The only one I've had is venison, and I LOVE it! Unfortunately, you can't buy it anywhere, and I'm not a hunter. I can't understand why you can buy just about any wild animal meat but not venison.

It doesn't taste anything like chicken or turkey -- although I like those two very much. Ostrich tastes like beef to me.

Well then,we have very different taste buds.

Well-done. I don't know anything more than that.

Well, that might explain it. That's like Koreans saying they had turkey lunchmeat and were not impressed -- they've never had a full-blown turkey dinner.

I'm very impressed with your list. Culinarily speaking I must have been living under a rock most of my life.
