I have not told people in this group yet, but I own a small web design business, Bright Idea Web Solutions (http://www.brightideaweb.com). I particularly enjoy doing web sites for churches and home builders. I know that there are still a lot of churches that don't have web sites yet. Does anyone go to a church that doesn't have a web site yet?

Nope!! Our new church plant even had a website before there was a church!! :)

Our website is www.nbc.org and the church plant is www.ichristianc.org

I think it's so important for a church to have a website today. Actually, I was just in a meeting to discuss some new features we're going to add to the website. One will be a page for the worship teams that will be an archive of what worship songs we've done each week so they can look back (and possibly ahead if we have the songs picked out enough ahead of time) to be able to plan what they'll do. Another thing is that on Wednesday, we'll put up an iTunes playlist of the songs that will be sung on Sunday and it will be up until the following Wednesday so that people can listen to the songs even before we get to the service. Then for those who are not with us on Sunday, the can also listen and join in the worship too. :) I thought those were great ideas!

I looked at both churches' web sites and I thought they were designed well. I agree with you that it is important for a church to have a web site. That is awesome that your church will add worship songs to the web site that people can listen to. People who move to a new area are often looking for a new church to attend. I believe that a church's web site can be a good resource to look at when you decide what churches you would like to visit.

We have a site through a free service. We bought the domain name and have it forwarded to the site.

We are in a small town but still have many who find out about us on the web. I think every church should want to have a site, and with as many free or lo cost services available, there's no reason not to.

When we were looking for a church, I was disappointed when I couldn't find anything out about them on the web. Of course some don't have much outside either - like service times!

What's almost as bad as not having a website is having a website that is never maintained or updated. Honestly, I spend anywhere from 1-5 hours a week to keep up our site and yet STILL find times where I missed something and someone lets me know I need to update a page. I still have dreams for even more on the site and want to get the whole church staff on, update the deaf pages and put on more about our missions and missionaries. I could really bring the site along if it were my full-time job. :)

I agree that it is important to update a church's web site on a regular basis. I designed a web site for my grandparents' church earlier this year. I built a calendar application on the web site where the secretary can add events. I gave her instructions on how to add events to the calendar. She added them for a few months, but she stopped doing them. I think it is very important to update a calendar at least once every month if there is one on your church's web site.

This is off topic. It is interesting that yoour church has a deaf ministry. I am deaf myself. Does your church have an interpreter for deaf people at the services?

I update as often as needed. I did our October calendar last week and already need to change a few things. When I find out there are changes, it gets changed on the calendar as well. Other than doing the monthly calendar, I spend no more than 15 minutes a month updating things that change.

We do but we also have a deaf church. We have two services - 9 and 11 and the 9 am is interpreted and then at 11, the deaf go over to have their Sunday School and then their own deaf church. They have two men who do the majority of the preaching - one deaf and one hearing but knows ASL. The deaf also have small groups and activities for themselves as well as joining in the larger church for things too. I actually just went to ASL class this morning!! I want to learn to at least be able to basically communicate with the deaf so that I can be a blessing to them. :) Additionally, we're thinking that once our new church has a building or church of our own (we meet in a hotel right now), we'll move the deaf church out to us since most of the deaf live near the new church. :) You can see the deaf website that they are currently using at http://www.nbc.org/deaf/ I just want to get them off of their program and onto ours so that I can keep them updated as best I can.

We had one but due to finacial issues we had to drop it. $27.50 a month could be better used somewhere else. We do have a facebook page though.

    Agreed.

it's better to stay simple and updated rather than fancy but out-of-date.

Our website is invaluable to us. On a slow month, there's 1000 unique computers hitting us up. Sure, some of those are regulars, staff, or people who've done our website as their home page.

But tons of folks make their first inquiry about our church via web.

For a simple church web site, there's no reason to pay more than 5-6 dollars a month for a web hosting plan.

Hey, you can get basic info out, as well as get out late-breaking urgent stuff (weather news, etc.)

Maybe not as many bells and whistles, but I'm sure it does the job.

For us, we just do our best to make sure our web address is well-known and well-published in our area. Definitely worth it.

Our second-most important feature for us: We do most of our event sign-ups on line. Definitely a plus for us.

I've recently taken to advising those who are new to the website thing about using Facebook. Like rbell pointed out, the church website administrator can put up church news (such as event cancellations, prayer requests, etc.) that "friended" church members can get immediately. And with Facebook applications on iPhones and Android phones, church members can be notified of on-goings at any time.

With Facebook still being a free service, this is possibly the best option for churches on a tight budget.

As for GoDaddy -- it might be the cheapest domain service, but their pornographic advertisements, and the number of pornographic websites that also utilize them...well, I pay a little bit more, but I go through a domain name service that guarantees no pornographic sites through its service.

I have not seen any pornographic advertisments for GoDaddy. Our Church has been using GoDaddy for years now.

As a matter of fact, GoDaddy's rules state that there is to be no pornographic material on pages set up on GoDaddy accounts. Notice:
I suspect the rumor that a number of pornographic websites use GoDaddy is fabricated. If you know of such sites, I suggest you call them and report said sites.

You can find Christian web hosting companies in the range of 5-7 dollars a month.

I am sure that Godaddy's opinion on what is pornographic is different that what is really pornographic. Their ads are notoriously vulgur. In fact, there was a big news cycle around their raunchy ads for the superbowl a few years ago.

Perhaps my definition of pornographic is a bit more strict. As has been noted by someone else, their commercials are built around sex.

If you do a search for GoDaddy and pornography, you'll find websites where users admit using GoDaddy for pornographic website domains (just be very careful about which ones you click on); and you can see the GoDaddy ads for yourself on YouTube.

The fact of the matter is, GoDaddy is actually part of several different companies, including Wild West Domains, and manages so many domains they can't actively monitor each and every one; and their primary concern is mass mailing (spam), not actually what each web site puts up as content.

I've seen some churches use Wordpress too with a static home page. Updates can be subscribed to via RSS.

Go to YouTube and search on "GoDaddy ads" I did and found plenty. I was going to link them but some of them are porn, IMO and I don't want to link to them here.
