Are Baptists Protestants

    There seems to be two different ways of thinking here and perhaps several variations under those two headings.

    One is that Baptists came forth from the Reformation as did the Presbyterians, Anglicans, etc...

    The other is that there is a Baptist "bloodline" all the way back to John the Baptist and that these Baptists had never been a part of the "church of Rome" and thus never needed to protest it.

    What is your view?

    Landmarkist, but out of the New Testament times rather than John the Baptist. We did not come out of the Romish reformation.

    If we came out of that reform movement, we sure are fast learners, except Smyth, the so-called founder, was never a Baptist, and he never returned to England.

    Jim1999 has posted over and over evidence that there were baptistic churches in Wales, well before the Reformation.

    The Particular Baptists of England sought out others of like faith and order for baptism, strong evidence that they believed that such Baptist-like groups existed earlier.

    But as far as clear evidence that there is an unbroken line of baptist folks outside the Church of Rome back to the new testament- there's really not any, is there? There have no doubt been some folks, many of whom we would not call orthodox but some who were, scattered here and there in history who were not a part of the Catholic Church, but proof of an unbroken line has not been discovered, right?

    But there really is no solid evidence. If you read the documentation, it is based on hearsay, often much later.
