    Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

Let's discuss, what does it mean.....

Just what it says. Jesus Christ loved his churches, died for them. Husbands are to love their wives in the same way, so intensely that they are to be willing to die for them.

He is writing to the congregation at Ephesus. This is the same congregation which Paul said Jesus purchased with his blood. (Acts 20:28)

It is wise here not to isolate this scripture from the surrounding verses. The marriage of husband and wife is likened to that between Christ and the church.

I was tempted to write what you did but to end it after the first 4 words. Paul is in the middle of talking about relationships (husbands/wives, parents/children, employer/employee) and tells husbands to be sacrificial in their attitudes and actions toward their wives. Just what it says.

Paul is taking sort of a dual theological role in Ephesians 5. On the surface, he is (indeed) writing about relationships between husband and wife, the ending of the pericope where he informs us that this writing pertains to Christ and the church -- tied to the created order by his reference to Genesis 2 -- makes the passage more meaningful than just a discussion of human relationships.

Paul is, in a sense, doing exactly what God has done -- equate human marriage with the intimacy of our relationship in the gospel -- powerful teaching and teaching that ought to transform the way we see both our relationship in Christ and also human marital relationships. Marriage, as instituted by God prior to the fall, is akin to the gospel, and our beliefs in either are really non-negotiable from God's perspective, as both are ordered into the creation of the cosmos.

Then the problem is with the church, not the command. The command still holds.

Agreed, but what is Christs' response in that situation

Wouldn't it be the same as the husband's...to still give your life for the one you love?

    ...yet Christ did just that...

1 John 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

John's usage of "whole world" always refers to all sinful mankind.

Then how do you see it and was this the point of asking us to discuss it?

If you reject Christ and turn from Christ, you have chosen another.

I disagree completely. A real believer in Christ won't reject Christ after having been really saved.

There is nothing in Ephesians 5 about that. It says nothing about the husband (Christ) rejecting his bride (the church).

I never said Christ rejected his church, I said the opposite.

It's still not anywhere to be seen in these verses. You asked us to discuss husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. If that wasn't what you wanted to discuss... never mind.

Define rejection. Is she being unfaithful? Does she reject your affection? Your headship? All three?

How absurd would all three sound? How long does one allow this to go on before they become numb and lose interest in their surroudngs? How does one get balance in their lives?

Let me clarify something, not all three, she's never been unfaithful, ie had a relationship outside of our marriage.

This is not speaking simply about physical death. This is saying that in the same way that Christ gave up His rights for the church, the man is to give up his for the wife. When any male decides to take a bride he is to do so with the understanding that he is never again to do or live to or for himself, but for his bride. Everything he does is from that point on is to present himself with a chaste and holy bride. He is never again to seek his own desires. It is no longer about pickup trucks, hunting, partying, nice clothes or any other thing that he might cloth himself with. Instead he surrenders all of himself for her, leading and sacrificing himself to holiness for her. He is her head and example. He is aware of her fears, moods, and needs, and thus seeks her best by not piling on her his responsibilities. He understands that she is the weaker vessel and that he is to see that she is cared for in all her emotional and physical needs. He is in fact to be the one here on earth that she can totally rely on in all her needs. His life is no more his, but rather a sacrifice for her. In all this he is responsible for his bride even as Christ is for the church.
