Although my high school never offered a Bible class, I do remember when they replaced the Lord's Prayer with "Famous Quotations."

I wouldn't mind the Bible being taught in public schools per se, as long as it was an elective and the instructor did not attempt to proselyte the students (even if he/she were a Bible-believing Christian).

Even in the current state of things, I don't know why it can't be used in context of literature or foundations of government or comparative religions. I'm sure there are other courses, they just aren't coming to me at present.

There was a day, well, way back when, when the local school board had backbone and control, nuns taught in public schools in catholic communities and Bible classes were taught, then in protestant communities similar situations existed and we raised a generation that is now looked up to as the generation that saved the world from the hand of Hitler.

Then there is the present generation .....

    I don't want it taught.

You can bet that it would be taught from a secularist perspective.

IMO, it would do more to undermine belief than augment it.

Since we know that will NOT happen, should we have a class available?

Whatever happened to the baptist distinctive of separation of state and religion?

No to any religious instruction in school including the Lord's prayer. Thank you very much.

Cheers, and I am a baptist,

    Jim

I think it would be very easy to write a curriculum that uses the Bible in history and literature without teaching any specific religion. I also think comparative religion classes that teach the specifics of multiple religions without endorsing any in particular would meet the establishment of religion clause. But simply because it is legal or constitutional does not mean it is a good idea. The potential for false teaching and the seeding out doubt far exceeds the potential good. Who would be teaching these classes and what would their qualifications be? We have seen the long reaching affects of liberal seminary professors, when their teachers tell them of contradictions and miss translations in the word of God will these children be prepared to refute them?

How about this, we let the state educational system teach reading and math, and we teach our children about God’s word. Or if we choose to home school we can teach the reading and math too. Anyone got a problem with that?

Amen. I do agree after having dealt with "religious schools" totally screwing up the Word and we think that the secular world can do a better job? I don't see that happening.

The Bible's beauty is in it's communication to the people of God. Without the Spirit, it is useless to those reading it. I can see a LOT more damage that would be caused by the world teaching about it than leaving it to believers to show it to the world.

I would have to say NO to Bible being taught in public schools

    Heres why

Lets just say the Principal decides to start a Bible curriculum---he gets the "go ahead" from the school board and whoever else needs to "touch" the decision

Then he begins to fill the teaching spot-----and he selects the new teacher on the block----who so happens to be muslim(or wiccan, buddist, or any other antichrist religion) or he selects the teacher who so happens to be an athiest or worse yet happens to be agnostic(I believe there is a
God but I have no part in whoever He is)

It would be like giving Bonnie and Clyde the combination to the doors of Fort Knox!!!!!

We have lost the concept of the Bible being a HOLY thing of God---in the Old Testament the teaching of Scripture belonged to the Hebrew Priests---It would have been unheard of to invite a Philistine, Egyptian, Amalikite, Sinite or anyone of the citizenship of the city of Jericho to open the holy scrolls and teach

In the New Testament---early on in the four gospels---the Bible says that Jesus was handed the scroll of Isaiah----and He found the place written---and began to read-----now----are you not glad that the Hebrew Holy Man didn't just say----"Well---tell ya what----we're just gonna let this Samaritan bystander do our reading for us and let that Egyptian passing through "expound" on what the Samaritan just read!!!"

Yes, the Believer may carry his/her Bible to school---but NO---we can't allow the Church's JOB to be done by the Government!!!

Western civilization cannot be properly understood without a strong working knowledge of the Bible. Yes, it should be taught.

I see room for the Bible to be used in various classes in high school. I see more room for the Bible to be abused in those same classes. And one could exchange the word Bible for the title of any other religious text.

I fall on the side of let the parents teach religion and let the schools (or homeschool parents lol) teach the rest.

Uh-oh. Not the "greatest generation" stuff. As if being taught the Bible in school, mostly by non-believing or nominal Christians, had anything to do with that. We all know that sin was an issue then and is an issue now.

Keep the Bible out of public schools. For the most part they don't believe it nor do they understand how to interpret it.

Western Civilization is easily understood without the Bible - Might and White are always right!
