The US Senate has passed Senate Bill s510 making it a crime, enforceable by Homeland Security, to grow a Tomato or a Cucumber in my yard. This, stupidity, passed by 74 to 25.

I'd like to know where all the liberals are who screamed "Bush=Hitler!" now that we have someone in the White House who really is taking away our liberties.

That's wonderful news - I hate tomatos and cucumbers - and I think nobody should be made to eat them.....especially kids - my goodness that child abuse...

bummer I just googled s510 oh boy......

and if you grow your own food, the supply cannot exceed 30 days...

No your wont be a criminal. I believe that this doesn't apply to growing and eating your own food.

It does apply to those that grow and sell food, which would hurt the small local farmer, especially those that sell from local food stands and farmer markets. They would have much more expense and paperwork to continue to do business as usual.

Not QUITE there, yet. Right now this will hurt the small farmers, from what I've read. We the people aren't quite to the point where we will let Uncle Sam tell us we can't grow our own food for our own personal consumption.

That's where this is heading, though. Big government wants to control the food supply and medical industry. After they do that, we're just putty in their hands. Give 'em another generation and they might accomplish that goal.:tear:

This, imho, is why congressmen should not have staffs. If they had to come up with ideas, research them, type them up themselves, we wouldn't have these kinds of laws forced on us. They just wouldn't time.

And it would save us as taxpayers a boatload of money - maybe enough for the farmer's market on Saturdays.

I don't think it is reasonable to really expect a senator or congressman to have no staff at all.

What we need is elected officials that have good morals, good common sense, and that properly educate themselves on the issues before them.

Oh I agree. I was just making a point that their staffs are too big and they inflict things on us that they wouldn't if they didn't have all that wonderful help. They can each have a small staff, but a couple of assistants and researchers should be enough.

    What a great bill!
No more mysterious Zuccini's showing up on my doorstep mid-summer.
I'll call Homeland Security and have the bugger that dropped it on the porch arrested.

Then again I can't share my extra tomato's with the neighbors either.
Maybe I'll save them toss them at a my congressman... that's still legal, isn't it?

No, tossing tomatoes is NOT still legal. Remember the lady who tossed a paper cup with ice in at a lady who was being mean? Throwing stuff turns the objecst or objects into missiles, which may be deemed a terroristic act.

Might I recommend, I know this is crazy, but sit down and read the bill as it is going through the senate...

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s111-510

Just a suggestion, just a suggestion...

BTW, as I read the site this bill HASN'T been passed the Senate yet. Just saying.

May I point out that the bacteria-laden veggies that caused people to get sick, which this bill is an obvious attempt to help prevent -- already go through licensing, taxation, etc., etc. process? And the situations in the past that have brought up this fear, were all through mass-producing factory-type environments?

So why would anyone want to incur the headache that would result from regulating Farmers' Markets and neighborhood sharing?

As I scan though the mountain of words that is this bill, looking at some of those things that were struck out, I see where one proposal would have required laboratory testing ... and suddenly the light goes on.

It's all about money, and who gets paid.

My FIL deals with cattle----which it seems the said bill does not include

But I have a buddy who lives in MS---who decided he'd raise a field of Peanuts to sell to the local Farmer Market in Baton Rouge

He went to purchase the seed to plant and was shocked to find out he had to "register" for the seed

The same was true when he wanted to grow Okra to sell at local market---he had to register the seed

You break those laws and you could find yourself seated next to a hardened criminal in county jail

    "What you here for??"

    "Growing Peanuts----You??"

    "First Degree Murder!!"

Hey, I know I am a Canadian and all that, but shouldn't you be in touch with your buddy Al Gore? Isn't he the environmental guru of the nation? Aren't there a number of other environmental agencies pushing for the same agendas--"going green." I thought that was the big thing in America now, especially in California (and in some other states that we occasionally here about in the Great White North.

Even here (where right now the temperature is -31) they advocate us city slickers to use our own property to grow our own tomatoes and other vegetables, and do what we can "to save the world." Use your lawn clippings and vegetable peelings for compost. Recycle. Avoid pesticides. Go organic! You don't need much land. You could do something even on a terrace of an apartment. The city encourages such things. I thought America was more "environmental-friendly"?

It's all about the money and control, DHK. Sure, you can grow a potted tomato, but when the govt. and big corporations (can we say Monsanto?) control all the seed, will it even be a tomato? Or will it be a genetically modified frankenfood?

If they can control what we eat, they can control our health. Add to that "government healthcare" and things start to look really scary. Maybe I just need a tin foil hat, I don't know. I do know that our government has more important things they need to do rather than mess with our food.
