From a now closed thread it has been implied twice now that the Scripture stating "where a person's money is, is where the heart lies" is in regards to those who pay for formal theological training are being more obedient, are the true scholars, and are the ones who can find true doctrine while not doing so means you are just "trying to get by", disobedient and lazy in their desire and search for biblical knowledge and truth.

Are the doctors indwelt with the "medical spirit" while uncle Bob is not? It has already been pointed out comparing a spiritual matter with physical fails.
So will I...but that is not what this is about, is it? It's about 2 believers who study and have a desire in doing so, but one with "formal" training as opposed to one who does not.
Complete strawman...and bologna for the following reasons.
First, you completely rip that verse from context.
Second, you are putting a monetary value on something spiritual.
Third, it has been repeatedly stated it is NOT about the person with the "I can get by..." mentality.
Fourth, what one spends their money on does not equate to how much biblical knowledge they have. If a believer is supporting and giving according to how Scripture shows, they are free to spend the rest however they see fit and how the Spirit leads. Not spending it on expensive formal training does not mean the person is an "I can get by..." person you are labeling them with by spending their money on the things you list. Read Deut. 14.

I take great offense to such a prideful mentality that biblical knowledge can and must be bought. Basically anyone who has been financially blessed should spend the majority on formal education regardless of calling by God and in order to understand correct doctrine.

How can a person judge another's heart?

I am still shocked this is how he views fellow Christians that don't have a theology degree. This is not considered arrogant?

Conceit is a disease that makes every one sick, but the person that has it.

One's scholarship is increasingly vapid if it has no application in their own life.

The test for any scholar is to see their commitment to Christ and the Missio Dei in their lives.

You can have as many degrees as a thermometer and still be a jerk.

According to men we cannot know another's heart. According to God we can. God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar
    The answer is in scripture.
Matt. 7:16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
matt 15:19For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Matt 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

I think I will believe God instead of men.

You mean "baloney." Not a good start for someone wanting to marginalize a formal education.

It will show where a person's heart is, and you cannot escape that fact. It's a universal, non-optional principle.

Take you and Heavensdad. If I wanted to know what wine to buy for a certain dinner, or what beer is better for the Superbowl, or what winecooler I should offer my daughter, I'd be apt to ask you.

If I wanted advice on a good commentary, I'd be apt to give more heed to Heavensdad.

I know exactly what I mean, thank you. Not to mention I never marginalized anything, I'm sure that is the hyperbole you are known for coming out.
    baloney | boloney [sense-specific] | bologna [informal, synonym, sense-specific] | nonsense [slang, synonym, sense-specific]
Summary: [slang] foolishness; nonsense. | [informal] bologna | [slang] nonsense

You can remove your foot from your mouth at any time and walk on down to another thread.

Not my point. Please follow along.
Did you mean "Havensdad" or is there another invisible person participating on this thread?
Go back to your glass house.

Really? How about all those TV preachers with the big hair begging for your seed money? They are well educated, but their hearts are hardly in the right place. So you can't just make a blanket statement that people who are attending Seminary and spending thousands of $ for it have their heart in the right place.

That's not what I said, nor is that what Havensdad said. Christ said, Where your treasure is, your heart will be also.

    You cannot escape that.

People with a heart for knowledge for God will invest their money thus, whether the education is formal or not. Those with a heart for temporal and worldly pleasures will invest it thus.

Actually, this is quite interesting, because almost NONE of these men have theological education of any kind. Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar, and many, many others, all LACK any kind of reputable theological training. In fact, I cannot think of one who has anything but an "honorary" degree.

This is just another argument in favor of a rigorous Seminary program! :tonofbricks:

I would also like to add a scripture verse. Ec.12:12
Also God complimented David not so much on his knowledge but on his heart.

I'm not against seminary education, but it is only as good as those doing the teaching. If they are half a bubble off, everyone coming out is going to be AT LEAST half a bubble off.

As to putting money into schooling showing your heart is in the right place--ick--ack--hack--come on, hair ball.

It MIGHT. It might also show you want a certain career, or are prideful, or just plain don't listen to Jesus.

He told us to feed the hungry. He told us to visit the sick and in prison. He told us through His Word to take care of the widows and orphans.

And if that pricey education is keeping us from doing this, we need to ditch the pricey education.

Mt 6:19 ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:Mt 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Mt 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

This states a universal truth. A man's heart will be upon what he treasures most. If his treasure is in heaven, heaven will have his heart. If God be the treasure of our souls, our hearts, i.e. our affections and desires will be placed on things above. An earthly minded man proves that his treasure is below; a heavenly minded man shows that his treasure is above.
Mt 6:21 doesn't have anything to do with seminary or bible college. Treasure in heaven means putting God first. That can be done in or out of school.
