    Interesting.

    Privatizing Roads

A major shortcoming of the deficit reduction plan concocted by the president’s Fiscal Commission is that it assumed that the federal government should continue doing everything it currently does. For example, the plan proposed a 15 cent per gallon increase in the federal gasoline tax to fund infrastructure projects. But why not allow the private sector to play a greater role in financing and maintaining infrastructure like roads?

Or turn the "freeways" into toll roads. "Freeway" was originally meant to refer to the absence of cross roads and red lights. It did NOT mean toll free.

Personal experience is that drivers are more civilized when required to exit through a toll booth.

That has the advantages of being an actual "Use Tax". Except that the surface streets would probably pick up a lot more traffic...

I did that when I went to training near DC. I left earlier and used surface streets to avoid tolls.

Never driven through Chicago but have driven around the south end of the lake on I-80/I-90 many times. The close spacing of toll booths is terrible!

When I lived in Florida I traveled the "Bee Line Express" around Orlando quiet frequently-----seems the farther down the express you went(either way)the closer the toll booths were to each other

Your car hasn't even shifted into overdrive yet----dang---here comes another toll!!!!

But consider the Ohio Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and NY Throughway outside the NY metro area. Nice roads.
