Have you read the book Churched?

What were your thoughts/opinions on the content?

I read it recently and was appalled but not shocked by some of his childhood experiences. I have had similar myself.

No. But I would be interested in hearing about his childhood experiences. (whoever "he" is.)

I was not raised in church and haven't had the experiences others talk about.

I may download it on Kindle. How about whetting my appetite by citing some illustrations and/or details from the book. Thanks!

Hey DH? You can download a sample of the book from Amazon. It sounds interesting so I'll probably add it to my list come payday. (lol, everything waits till payday!)

These post-fundamentalist religious memoirs have become pretty commonplace. I think most of it is therapy for the writer...though it provides insights for many of us in leadership.

I haven't read the book. That said I'm pretty familiar with the type. The ravages of fundamentalism on so many of my friends (and myself to a degree) is something of which we need to be aware.

There have been things like this in all ages. I'm sure our children will write about the silly things endured in the programmatic youth groups, small groups, and way too hip for themselves worship times.

Fundamentalism just seems to be an easy target. I wonder why.

Because the doctrines and attitudes of fundamentalism have been more destructive and harmful to individuals than those of any other evangelical (and I use that term loosely) strand. I wonder how many have been driven from the Church because of horrific, sub-christian treatment by many fundies.

I haven't come across or read this book. What is the "churching" of its title? I rather doubt it has anything to do with the Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox rite known as "The Churching of Women" - a rite of thanksgiviving in those denominations after the birth of a child.

"Churching" is the administration of church discipline.

Thanks, Aaron. I have never heard the word used that way before; here in the UK (as far as I am aware) church discipline is always called "church discipline".

I read most of the reviews, positive and negative. My curiosity is piqued, so I am going to download it and read it as I recover from triple by-pass.

I was thinking the title referred to the author's current status...."Churched."

When y'all read it, I'd love to discuss it.

I laughed at the Jesus cookies and the Ben Hur moment.

    Hmmmm.

Here are 3 excerpts from the reviews.

Its hard to tell which way the book leans.

This one makes it seem like it might be just a light hearted look at church life in general...

While these 2 make it seem to be a blasting of hyper-fundamentalism....

It's a little of the former and more of the latter.

I laughed at some things because I shared those memories. Other things I was appalled. Then others, I disagreed with his tone. I have a mixed review, myself.
