The thread on the Remnant got me to thinking and Amy suggested that this might be a good idea. If we believe that we view Jesus Christ in the scriptures of the Old Testament, then what or who are the types of Christ found in the Old Testament?

Please give reasoning why they one you mentioned is a type of Christ?

I’ll start with an obvious ( I think) one… Moses –Leading the children of Israel out of bondage in Egypt.

Abraham, at the sacrifice of Issac. Multiple types and shadows there, including that the sacrifice was on the same mount that later became the Temple mount, that God called on Abraham to sacrifice his only son, that a substitutionary atonement was made, that a suitable sacrifice was provided, that the sacrifice rode there on the back of a donkey, etc.

    What about Adam:

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Romans 5:12-17 (ESV)

There is also the sacrificial system of Israel. An "unblemished lamb" was required for blood atonement of the people. Tied to this is the entire concept of Passover, where "we are saved by the blood." Before this is even God's killing of animals (shedding of blood, taking of life) to "cover over" the sins of first man and woman.

Noah was the "salvation" of humankind.
Crossing over the Jordan, as a picture of our crossing over from death into life.
    The priest Melchizedek.
    Jonah, three days dead.
Moses lifting up the staff in the wilderness; all the people looking to the staff to be healed.

And, perhaps thousands more examples if we but had eyes to see.

I just bought, in fact received from Amazon yesterday, a good book on this subject by Sidney Greidanus called, "Preaching Christ from the Old Testament".

I have been preaching for years that the Bible is an autobiography- written by God about God.

It is not a book of a thousand subjects- it has only one subject- Jesus Christ.

That is the way I see it as well. If we can't see Christ as the subject. We just might better doing some praying.

I think Adam ( Jesus removed sin), Isaac (sacrifice), Melchizadek (High Priest, David (King), Moses (Prophet like Moses), but what about Judges? Anyone a specific type from the judges?

Heheh, nothing new under the sin.....

“My pick was Joseph as a type of Christ, and, besides the many points of analogy between him and Christ, the striking thing to me is that nowhere in the scripture is to be found any reference (or ‘pointer’) that points to Joseph as a type of Christ (correct me if I’m wrong). Here’s what Pink (in case you ain’t figgered it out yet, I’m a big Pink fan) has to say in ‘Gleanings From Genesis”, where he devotes seven chapters to Joseph alone:

    Quote:
“…..Thus Adam represented His Headship, Abel His Death, Noah His Work in providing a refuge for His people, Melchizedek pointed to Him as priest, Moses as prophet, David as King. But the fullest and most striking of all these typical personage was Joseph, for between his history and that of Christ we may trace fully a hundred points of analogy! Others before us have written upon this captivating theme, and from their writings we shall draw freely in the course of these papers on the typical significance of Joseph’s history…..”

    http://www.pbministries.org/books/pi...genesis_40.htm

There are at least 100 ‘similarities’ between Joseph and Christ in the scripture. These are just a few of them gleaned from this site: http://www.apocalipsis.org/Joseph.htm

JOSEPH AS A TYPE OF CHRIST

There is nothing bad (sinful) mentioned about Joseph or Jesus in scripture.

Both were loved by their father

    Both rejected by their brothers

Both Joseph and Christ were unjustly tried, Joseph was unjustly charged with trying to rape Potiphar's wife (Gen 39:1-20).

Both were unjustly sold see Gen 37:28 and Mat 26:15.

Both suffered; Joseph in prison and Jesus on the cross.

Both were later crowned with glory and honour (Gen 41:39-45, Heb 2:9).

    Both delivered men from death

Genesis 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph
Matthew 3:17 "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased."

Genesis 37:4 his brothers, they hated him
John 15:25 They hated me without a cause.

Genesis 37:8 His brothers said to him, "Are you indeed to reign over us?... So they hated him even more because of his dreams and his words.
Luke 19:14 We do not want this man to rule over us.

Genesis 37:11 So his brothers were jealous of him,
Mark 15:10 it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over.

Genesis 37:18 They saw him from a distance, and before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him. Matthew 27:1 the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death.

Genesis 37:23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe
Matthew 27:28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him

Genesis 37:28 sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver.
Matthew 26:15 They paid him thirty pieces of silver.

Genesis 39:4 Joseph found favor in his sight ...he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had.
John 3:35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands.

Genesis 40:2-3 Pharaoh was angry with his two officers ... and he put them ... in the prison where Joseph was confined.
Luke 23:32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.

Genesis 40:13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office (to one, a message of life)
Luke 23:43 He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

Genesis 40:15 I have done nothing that they should have put me into the dungeon."
Hebrews 4:15 one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin.

Genesis 41:46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh
Luke 3:23 Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his work.

Genesis 41:55 Pharaoh said ... "Go to Joseph; what he says to you, do."
John 2:5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

Genesis 45:1 Joseph made himself known to his brothers.
Luke 24:31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him

Genesis 45:7 God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors.
1 John 4:9 God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.

Genesis 45:12 And now your eyes ... see that it is my own mouth that speaks to you.
Luke 24:39 Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself.

Genesis 45:18 Take your father and your households and come to me
Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you that are weary ... and I will give you rest.

Genesis 45:26-28 26 And they told him, "Joseph is still alive! ... Israel said, "Enough! My son Joseph is still alive. I must go and see him before I die."
Luke 24:5 Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.

Genesis 46:30 Then Israel said to Joseph, "Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive."
Luke 2:29 "Now Lord, Thou dost let Thy bond-servant depart in peace, according to Thy work; For my eyes have seen Thy salvation,

Genesis 47:23 Then Joseph said to the people, ...I have this day bought you
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 you are not your own? For you were bought with a price”

Dan. 6:11 Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.

12 Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.

13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.

14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

15 Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.

16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.

17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.

Right here, I think, shows that Daniel was a "type" of Christ in the OT.

Here is one that I believe shows Jesus in the OT, too.

1Kings 17:9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

12 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. Jesus told the people that His flesh was meat indeed. So I believe the meal here is a symbol of His body. The oil is made as a reference of the Spirit(5 wise and 5 foolish virgins with and without oil in their vessels). So I can "plainly see" His Body and Spirit here!! I also believe the "two sticks" are a symbol of the cross. So you have "meal", "oil", and "two sticks".....sure looks like Calvary to me..

13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

Dan. 2:31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.

32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,

33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.

34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. Jesus was that "stone" that smote that image...He is the Stone the builders rejected, that became the Chief corner stone!

    i am I am's!!

Good examples in this thread. You are right about Daniel.

I'm convinced that no man living today, myself included, has found all the types of Christ in the OT. I'm determined to find as many as I can.

An early type of Christ in the bible is the greater light (sun) in Genesis 1. The lesser light (moon) is a picture of His people. He's the source of all light in our world. He's the light that shineth in darkness. He said, "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness." The moon does not have light of itself, but rather reflects the light of the sun. In the same way God's people get their light from Jesus Christ and are commanded to let that light shine. The moon shines in darkness. God's people are lights in a dark world. Jesus said, "ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light shine, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

    I ran across this tonight.

2 Samuel 12:13-14 And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto you shall surely die.

2 Samuel 12:18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. .........

God took away David's sin but his innocent son (a figure of Christ) had to die. God's wrath was appeased.

    What do you think?

I don't think that this one has ben mentioned: Abel a keeper of the sheep offering up a more excellent sacriface than his brother, Cain.

Apart from the individuals and actions that were "types" and "shadows" there are also the overarching "themes" in the OT that pointed directly to Messiah, promised in Genesis 3.

The "mission of God" (missio Dei) to make His glory known throughout all creation, expressed initially in "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth..." at a time when the persons hearing the command were without sin and knew God's glory directly, recapitulated in Noah post-flood, and essentially again (though spiritually) in the Great Commission, repeated in each of the Gospels and Acts, and seen fulfilled in Revelation with people from every tribe, tongue, and nation before the throne of God, worshiping and giving Him glory.

The "kingdom of God" where God's rule, God's peace, God's presence, and a total absence of darkness (evil) exists is another overarching theme of the Scriptures. Jesus announced that the kingdom arrived with His coming, though many at that time and down through the ages have misinterpreted the concept, as we live in a tension between "already and not yet" fulfillment of the kingdom. We eagerly cry out, "Come Lord Jesus" so that the kingdom can be fully realized "on earth as it is in heaven."

The concepts of "prophet, priest, and king," which are all fulfilled in Christ, who is all and more!

    Type of Christ in bold....

Psa 118...Two word here..the stone that becomes the cornerstone.....and the word DAY in verse 24 is a picture of Christ.

22 The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.
    23This is the LORD’s doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
    24This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

    Lev 2:1...Flour..

"When anyone brings a grain offering as an offering to the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour. He shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it

    Matt 23:37...HEN

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!

    Matt 12.....Jonah..

40For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

    Rev 22:2....Leaves

2through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

    Lev 1:5....Bull

Then he shall kill the bull before the LORD, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall bring the blood and throw the blood against the sides of the altar that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

    Isa 32:2....Hiding place...Shelter.....Steams....Shade

Each will be like a hiding place from the wind,
    a shelter from the storm,
like streams of water in a dry place,
like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.

    Gen 49:14.....Donkey

    "Issachar is a strong donkey,
    crouching between the sheepfolds.

    Isa 61:10....Garments...Robe.....Headdress....Jewels

    I will greatly rejoice in the LORD;
my soul shall exult in my God,
    for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

    Psa 102:6.....OWL

I am like a desert owl of the wilderness,
    like an owl of the waste places;

    Psa 22:6....WORM

But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.

    2 Cor 5:21...even SIN...

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

    Rev 3:3......THIEF

Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.

    Ex 28:2...Aaron

And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.

    1 peter 2:25...Shepherd....Overseer

For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

But thou shalt be thrown down- by Christ.

Even this story is about Christ.

The whole Bible is a narrative about Christ.

The stories that do not directly address him are leading up to something about him.
