OK - I didn't think I wanted this but now I really am beginning to think I do. I've been finding a lot of books that I have downloaded onto my iTouch but since it only shows about 5 sentences at a time, it's a little cumbersome to read and if I do it on my laptop, I can't take it with me. So I was thinking of either the Nook or the Kindle. I saw the Kindle in Target last week and was shocked at how the screen looked - LOVED it!! I'm going to go to Barnes and Noble maybe tonight to check out the Nooks. I'm thinking of going Nook because I can easily get books from my library which would be great (I'm actually reading President Bush's book Decision Points on my computer after downloading it from the library - VERY cool!).

Does anyone have any recommendations? Things to look out for? What do you think? I'm thinking this will be my birthday/Mother's Day/anniversary gift in May. :)

Nook is available in color. Kindle probably has the best reading screen.

I'm leaning to the Kindle myself, as 99% or more of my reading doesn't have pictures...

Another thing that is VERY attractive to me is getting magazines and newspapers on the Nook. I would MUCH rather not get the paper ones and just glance through an electronic version.

Come on now. You know you want to see that occasional picture of Spurgeon with a cigar!

Ann, the magazines would be a good draw. When I'm actually really into submitting writing or photos, I have to read the mags I'm submitting to and get a good feel for what they want.

Getting one of these has been in the back of my mind a while now.

On the other hand, vision issues would say a Kindle. Or to prevent vision issues, but since I have them, I want the biggest, clearest screen possible and one that still show clear. I also have dyslexia and use overlays (out and it's KILLING ME!!!!) and need something that will stay sharp and focused with two overlays because I can't find my color without putting two overlays together.

I'd imagine that even without those issues, it would be good to pick one that causes the least eye strain. Of course I'm prejudiced that way, but the eye thing takes precedence imo because it's your body taking the toll and that's worth giving up some mentally pleasurable extras.

I'll take a look at the Nook to see how it looks. I really liked the Kindle's iInk so now to see what the Nook looks like. I'll look at both the color and the regular.

The ereaders are ridiculously overpriced so I will hang back until they come down in price. For myself, I would buy an ereader that was a folder type....similar to what a book is, I don't know but to me a book is something you open, how hard is that and of course it would be a protection for the screen.

You can buy covers that do just that - fold over the screen to protect it.

Netbook, not e-reader. But if you really want just an ereader I like the kindle software better than the nooks (I have both on my netbook). The kindle allows me to start a book on one computer and finish on another and holds my page while I move. (I like my desktop and read there quite a bit, but other times I want to be more comfortable so I use the netbook)

I'm on the netbook now. :)

Yep, on my computer, I now have Kindle and a program from our library to borrow books. I know I can borrow the library books on the Nook but not the Kindle without some doing. I have the Kindle and iBook on my iTouch and will be working on getting the library stuff on it as well. But I find reading on the Touch to be just a little ridiculous since you literally get about 3 sentences per screen. LOL

I am also a netbook fan. I can download multiple e-book programs on it and read (or listen to) a variety of books in a variety of formats. I check out the max from the online library in NC each week.

I've got about 10 hour battery life and an hd screen. battery life is not as good, but screen quality is much better.

I have the Kindle app on my netbook until such a time as I can get an actual Kindle. The benefit for me, living overseas, is that I can download from Amazon. Nook, while asthetically appealing, wouldn't work for me. So, honestly, the choice was made for me based on my location.
