A Day of Fasting and Prayer

    Consider the following: Suppose an important issue that has the potential to have a long term impact on your church comes up at your business meeting. As a way of coming to a general consensus it is suggested that the church appoint a day of fasting and prayer. My question is has your home church ever decided to appoint a day of fasting and prayer? Advice would be appreciated.

    While in Germany, our church was going thru some trials, the men decided to fast for 24 hours - from 6 am Fri -- 6 am Sat. Fri after work, we all came to the church building for a time of prayer as we were fasting. We spent the entire night there - I suppose some slept in shifts as we attempted to pray the entire night. It was a truly a time of blessing. Sat am - we all went to my house to Break our fast. Waffles were served and they were great.
    I would recommend for a church to do such.

    It is one of the best things you can do for your ministry. The first church I served in post seminary and the church I served in while I was in college had the staff do this at special times.

    Once we had a staff member who was facing inoperable cancer with only 3 months to live. We had the leadership and staff, and any laity, gather together and fast and pray for a day for his condition. We began by anointing him with oil and laying on hands. His cancer disappeared by his next check up.

    Other times it has been over major decisions (building campaigns, where we are headed strategically, etc.) It is a helpful practice...I wish more churches would be willing to do it! :)

    I find that church decreed days of fasting and prayer and usually nothing more than an opportunity for some people to appear spiritual. I've been in a church where the pastor would call upon people to pray and fast on a certain day and the result was always people puffing up their chest in discussions about hwo much they gave up and how often they prayed.

    Prayer and fasting should be an individual decision and one kept private.

    Please control your shock, but I agree with Matt,,,,,it should be personal and private.

    Gathering and anointing with oil is a pastor and deacon thing.

    Leadership called for it in my church when saints objected to the leadership's violation of the church constitution.

    Talk about manipulative:tear:
