We've done this, I truly believe.

I read the threads about women preaching, or about creation, or arminian vs calvinist teaching, and I think we have drunk from the Roman pool.

I know this will offend some of the landmark line--I used to be one.

But the church is composed of the believers.

It doesn't necessarily meet at your sanctuary.

You don't run it, control it, call its' leaders or decide its teachings.

In the light of eternity your degrees (though perhaps useful) are meaningless.

Your ceremonies do not determine anyone's eternal destiny.

Everywhere believers go is "the church." The preaching, praying, singing, and teaching that go on outside your walls is just as valid--maybe more so--than what goes on inside them.

When did we decide we as a group get to set dogma? How different is the concept of the BFM from RCC dogma? Really?

If we believe the only valid baptism is "our" baptism, how do we differ from the RCC?

If we view our clergy as set apart and special, a prized group most are not privy to enter and without who's presence and blessing you do not have real church, have we not made them priests?

I believe God fulfilled and set aside ritual Judaism, replacing it with the church. (Practically speaking, not necessarily theologically speaking. Let's not go there in this thread.) I don't believe we currently are called to make blood sacrifices on an altar in Jerusalem.

There may have been a time God spoke through the RCC or what became the RCC. However, when ritual became the end all be all instead of Jesus Christ, He gave the Reformation.

And now we in the church commonly called Protestant (and I agree we may not truly be "protestants") are as judaizing as any Pharisee and as ritualized as any in the RCC.

And shame on us: if we continue down this road, we may have the blessed privilege of carrying the gospel ripped from OUR hands also.

I see it starting now: many wonderful preachers, men and women of God, effectively bringing lost souls to the Savior. Some teach public school. Some sing country and western music. Some raise babies--their own and those of others. Some sell used cars. Some peddle insurance.

What they have in common is a disdain for the "organized church."

And God forgive us, sometimes when we church folk debate here or out in the world, I cannot blame them.

Actually the Catholic Church does not believe that "their" baptism is the only valid baptism.

Baptism by other Christian denominations are recognized by the Catholic Church - depending on how it was done.

Goodness. I sure dont see anything like THAT happening.

Everything you are referring to..in my view of things..is 100% in the area of conservative evangelical Christianity.

As a born again person now, after fleeing catholicism years ago, I want nothing to do with the Great Whore.

Honestly, why would any of that cause you to think of Catholicism?

    * Regarding women, they have been steadfastly against women priests.

    * Regarding creation, they are quite orthodox there.

    * Regarding Arminionism vs calvinism, they dont allow thier people to have any individual views regarding those things, since they are commanded to believe what the magesterium commands them to believe.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean?

That's right. The RCC will accept any baptism from a church that believes in the Trinity and is done in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. As a side note, they also recognize Protestant marriages as sacramental.

The RCC now accepts most claimed Christian denominations as Christian with a small side note. They say that they are not the true church, but are accepted under the umbrella of the true church the RCC. Very magnanimous of them if you think about it.

Or maybe you've lost touch with the common man on the street. What do you think?

    Ha ha!

No chance at all of that.

I am about as "common man on the street'ish" as a man can be.

You "wiffed" on that one big time.

    I'm going to cherry-pick from nodak's post

This could use some clarification. Where and how?

I don't want to denigrate nodak's concern for the direction some churches are going today. Some of them wear the name Baptist. And we should all be wary and alert to the wolves who may creep into our churches and attack the flock.

    Tom Butler...

Error. Christ did not shed His blood for the local church. God forbid. He shed His blood for all of us.

Nonsense. After I was born again, I shared the gospel with family and friends long before I started attending a local fellowship.

If they are born again they are!!

The church consists of all of the believers here on earth. Period. It is sometimes referred to as the universal church, or the kingdom of God, or Gods earthly family, etc.

Those who CAN do. Most do. Some cant. They are still part of "the Church"

Of course it does. weekly, if not more than that.

Of course it does. It happens regularly. (Where have you been all these years?)

It does exist. You and I are part of it. All born again people are part of it.

Unfortunetly Gods church has problems. Thats because its made up of flawed people. I agree with you on that point.

    God bless...

    Tom,

What you advocating, and defending, it sometimes referred to as "churchianity", in contrast to Christianity.

True Christ-ianity is what its all about.

Church-ianity tends to drive people AWAY from Christ, rather then TO Him.

    Not good.

Here's my rationale for my view about the church. My comments bolded, of course.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by churchianity. What I am defending is the idea that Jesus established his church during his earthly ministry, commissioned it at least twice to carry the gospel, worship, teach, evangelize and fellowship. It is uniquely fitted to carry out the Great Commission.

The so-called Universal Church is not. It blows an uncertain trumpet regarding the way of salvation, the efficacy of the ordinances (some call them sacraments). It is not unified in any way. It is a nebulous fantasy.

    Its what you are advocating.

And when He did that they had no local churches. They didnt exist. All he had at that time was a group of believers. They didnt have little local churchs all over the place with signs out front and meeting times shown.

And yet...Gods "Church" was growing, one person at a time.

PEOPLE are uniquely fitted to carry out the Great Commission, Tom. Whether they are part of a "local congragation", or not. People. The local church is nothing but a place for PEOPLE to gather.

One does not have to be *officially* "sent out" from a local congragation to tell people about Jesus, and invite then to join Gods family.

And you dont think some "local churches" arent doing that? We have local churches proclaiming the death grip if legalism, some other local churches are proclaiming dead orthodoxy, some other local congragations are proclaiming nothing but positive thinking little pep talks, while some other local churchs are proclaiming pure witchcraft.

There were no "local churchs" When John baptised Jesus, nor when they partook of the 1st Lords supper in the upper room.

God differs with you on that.

    To you, it obviously is.

    But not to God.

I'm not against local fellowships. I love mine, and the brothers and sisters there.

But "The Church" is primarily all of the believers here on earth. Thats why when I went on vacation one time to Mrytle Beach, I dropped into one of the local churches wednesday night meeting, and the fellowship there was just as good as the fellowship at my church!

We were all part of the same church. The ONE church here on earth.
