IMHO it is not a sin to work on Sundays (although I prefer not to).

I wonder how many people who loudly proclaim that it is a sin to work on Sundays think nothing about eating out at a restaurant on Sunday, thus causing the employees at that establishment to have to work on Sunday?

As one who works every Sunday (I'm a pastor) I hope it's not a sin!

Where I attend church, it is regarded inappropriate to do work that is not of great need ie tending the family needs whether that is domestic duties or if necessary working to earn a living. I do not go shopping for this reason as it is unnecessary for me to do so although I might like to do so.

My Sundays are church and social visits to friends etc, a day of rest

What scriptural basis does anyone have to think that it is a sin to work on Sunday?

On another thread someone said in essence that working on Sunday was a sin. I am surprised he has not posted here yet.

C- (since we are close friends, may I call you C? ) I agree there is no scriptural basis. We may have been taught that as we grew up, but there is no scriptural basis for it.

Funny how we base our lives on our upbringing, but do not understand why we do it.

I heard a story years ago - I may butcher it some, but basically it goes like this

This mother was teaching her young daughter (Susan) how to cook a turkey. Mom said you had to use a certain small size container for the turkey. The daughter asked why such a small one. Mom replied that she did not know why, but that is what your Great- Great-Grandma Mary said.
That did not satisfy the young girl. So she called her Grandma and told her that Mom insisted on using such a small container. Grandma only said that Great-Grandma said to do that. So Susan called her Great Grandma and asked the same thing. Still the same answer - Great-Grandmother Mary taught me that way. So Susan called her now very feeble Great-Great-Grandmother Mary and found the real reason. Mary said she had a very tiny stove, and never could understand why, in the following years her daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter could never figure out something so simple!!! :tonofbricks:
"Good for you Susan, I am proud of you!" :love2:

I believe it comes from Genesis....as God rested on the seventh day. It makes sense in order to allow the peasantry to have a day of rest and spend it in church for the sake of their soul.

As Christianity is built on the bones of the Old Testament, and the Jews observed the Sabbath as a day of rest and refraining from work, it is a natural follow on. Jesus criticised the Jews heirachy for the restraint in all forms of work rather than from unnecessary work.

I respect that opinion, and if that's his conviction, then it might be a sin for him.

But I don't see anything in scripture that says it's wrong to work on any day.

I do not think there is any major group that says it is always a sin to work on Sundays, but they will say that in cases of necessity (donkey in the ditch, no other option situations) and mercy (medical personel, firefighters, police) you are allowed to work.

While some of this is taken from the Old Testament, there is one verse from the New of import. Namely, in Revelation where the phrase, "The Lord's Day" (Revelation 1:10). This signifies that there is a day that was celebrated in the New Testament that should be completely devoted to God and Godly endeavours. It is, afterall, His day. Thus, traditionally the Lord's Day has been considered for Sunday because of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is in contrast to the Sabbath day, but there are also similarities. First, this day is designed for the church to worship God. Secondly, it is designed for other corporate and individual spiritual disciplines and worship. Finally, it is designed to give to our fellow man for ministry.

Thus, I think the nature of the discussion usually centers upon Revelation 1:10 on what does it mean that a certain day is the Lord's Day, and what practical applications will result.

Ruiz, many Orthodox Presbyterians have almost adopted a Jewish position on what they call Sabbath. I however know that my Lord has transcended Sabbath & that He is Lord of the Sabbath Mark 2:28

28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” IE He is the fulfillment of Scripture. All days are sacred now. The bride has come & we are to rejoice each & every day.

Yes, there is a movement in some circles of the OPC towards what they call Federalism. This is a recent invention that can be traced to the 20th Century Theology John Murray. I doubt, but I could be wrong, that this is the majority view in the OPC. Yet, even their view would allow for the broad categories of necessity and mercy as defined in the Westminster Confession of Faith.

I am not to sure about your answer. Should we have a conviction on something that the Bible does not prohibit? Some time ago I started a thread about "man-made" convictions.
Now, I am glad that he wants to attend church on Sunday - but I wonder if he patronize any business on Sunday - gas, restaurant, plumber, calling AAA if his vehicle breaks down, ect - if so then you are in essence a hypocrite.
Now, if he will not shop at any store or make any purchase for any reason (remember the Children of Israel did all their chores on Friday so they could honor the Sabbath) then I might consider respecting his decision

I would like to point out that the names of the days of the week (Sunday, Monday, etc.) also do not appear in the Bible. The command was to rest on the seventh day (of which this day has no name). Therefore, I cannot see "working on Sunday" as a sin. I can only see sin if a person refuses to set aside one day in seven as a day of rest.

When I was in the USAF, I was stationed in Saudi Arabia for a year. As Christians, we were not allowed to formally "go to church", but we still set aside one day in seven as a "day of rest". It fell on Friday, since the Muslims set aside the Islamic "day of rest" on Friday. We were still able to worship God (in private) and obey His command to have a "day of rest".

By the way, I still set aside a day of rest. Now I live in a country where that day is generally recognized as falling on Sunday, which (based on the predominant calendar) is the FIRST day of the week! It is not the "seventh" day, but it is one day of rest in seven days.

If someone is convicted not to and does, it is a sin.

Does the Bible say it is a sin? No.

I think the 4th commandment would say such a thing. The New Testament Apostles moved, by the inspiration of the Spirit, our worship from the 7th to the first, but they seemed to keep the 4th commandment.

I am not saying that I agree with the sabbitarians, but to say the Bible does not say to keep one in seven days holy unto the Lord is a stretch. You may say it is fulfilled in Christ (which I think is a tough argument) but it is in the BIble.

I have waivered on this issue personally. Yet, I think since it was a part of the creation ordinance, it is not a part of Sinai and thus I lean more towards the "Lord's view" formula.

Well this answer for me could go both ways.
I haven't read any other replies. So forgive if anyone has posted anything like this answer.

Well cooking to me is work and it's just like be a chef in a restaurant.
We have to eat and someone needs to prepare the food.
So is it a sin to eat and work to do it?

But then on the other hand you have chores like laundry or maybe some chores outside that needs to be done.
Does it really need to be done on Sunday?

I'm pretty sure wants you to have a day of rest. It's a blessing so why not accept it?:godisgood:
