Who are some of your faves, including ones that aren't strictly Christian authors? What do you think attracts you to their writing?

    Modern Authors:

Don Whitney (the most Biblically Spiritual author today)
John Piper (The most passionately theological author today)
Kent Hughes (His Philippians commentary brings a passion to the Biblical text, I have found his Genesis commentary just as good)
Joel Beeke (Deep theology that touches the heart)
DA Carson--(maybe the most versatile author I know)
Mark Noll--(perhaps the best Christian Historian today)

    Dead Authors:

Charles H. Spurgeon--there is nothing better than reading his sermons. I just can't read them, I often speak them.
John Owen, hard to read, but wonderfully deep
Johnathan Edwards, He caused me to fall in love with dead authors.
JC Ryle, (He writes in a way that seems very basic, but it isn't)
The Puritans, too many to select just one.

John Grisham - his law/crime novels (not really fond of his other works). He weaves a good story with a good amount of suspense and there is often a twist at the end. He also uses decent language for the most part.

Randy Singer - writes in the same vein and his language is always decent.

Jack London - EVERYBODY needs to read The Call of the Wild at least once. I've read it at least 10 times.

John Grisham - If you've read at least one book, then I don't have to explain.

    Jane Austen - Most brilliant.

C.H. Spurgeon - His writings never cease to make me think about things that I've never thought of before. I just bought a copy of his complete works.

Sigurd Olson and James Fenimore Cooper. The quiet life and the Leatherstocking Tales.

Stephen Ambrose, Cornelius Ryan, B.H. Liddell Hart, and William Shirer. I've learned much about the Second World War from these men.

Pierre Burton, one of Canada's best authors, in my opinion.

Shelby Foote, for his masterful work on the Civil War.

Over the years, I have been drawn to Elizabeth Eliot's writings. Frank Peretti.

Padre, did I ever tell you that my dad was really in to Margaret Truman's novels awhile back and that I wrote her a letter asking her to send him a Christmas card and she did?

I can't remember if I told you that or not.

She sent the card along with a typed letter. I'm pretty sure that an assistant typed it. But she did sign it.

    It was pretty cool.

We lost an unheralded national treasure in 2008. Her stories are well developed and show she knew her way inside the Beltway. I've read most if not all of the murder mysteries. I never read her non-fiction pieces but madre read both book about her parents Harry and Bess and enjoyed them.

Just a quick question: I distinguish between what I call professional devopment and recreational reading. I don't keep track of how many professional books I read but average about 100 recreational books a year. How many books do the rest of you read during a typical year?

I haven't read her myself, but my dad LOVES her murder mysteries. I can't remember when she sent him the card, but it was after 2000. When the letter came typed, we figured that she was too feeble to write and possible even didn't have the mental capacities to do so, but she signed it - very, very shakey handwriting.

Do you REALLY want to know how many books that I read per year? :BangHead:

Ah Scarlett, THAT was funny! You're gonna have to get him back for that. LOL

You guys and gals are amazing! I'm learning a new respect for a lot of you through some of these threads in the hobby's or all other discussions forum. Learning a bit more about you as individuals makes looking at your posts on more serious forum topics more interesting and gives a more thorough idea of how/why you think like you do.

Solid Christian legal thriller writer. I just finished "Fatal Convictions."

    Let's see...

    Christian Fiction
Chris Walley ("Lamb Among the Stars" SciFi trilogy, AWESOME)

    Randy Singer (legal thrillers)

    Shane Johnson (alternative and SciFi)

Bill Myers (genre hard to pin down, supernatural?)

    Alton Gansky (SciFi/adventure)

James BeauSeigneur (The Christ Clone Trilogy, incredible end times saga, blows Left Behind away!)

Sharon Hinck (Restorer's Sword series, fantasy)

    Secular Fiction
Lee Child: The Jack Reacher novels. Tense Adventure/mystery novels. Very good.

Clive Cussler: The Dirk Pitt stories; The Juan Cabrillo stories. SciFi/Adventure. Mr. Cussler spins a great yarn.

    Michael Crichton: SciFi/Adventure

Harlen Coben: Myron Bolitar mysteries (some foul language)

Love Michael Crichton. I used to wait for his books to come out.

I've read some of Alton Gansky and they were good.

I just finished my first Lee Child - The Hard Way. Very good story line, but brutal in parts. I put it down several times just because it was so intense.

I think I've read every book Agatha Christie wrote. I loved the Tommy and Tuppence ones especially. It's been years though, so I went to the library to see what they had on CD ;)

I've also read quite a bit Tom Clancy for a while. Someone else I need to look for on CD. I picked up one of his series paperbacks to take to Mexico one year and was surprised it was as good as it was.
