...There is a new web site that has a lot of info on just about everyone in the country, and anyone who knows your first and last name can access it.

It is easy to remove your name and block it from publishing the info to anyone who is interested in your personal info, family members, home value, social networks, etc.

    SEE: www.spokeo.com

I certainly hope this info helps those who do not want their personal info published to any Tom, Dick and Harriet to get a leg up and remove their names.

    Shalom,

    Pastor Paul :type:

Welcome to the electronic white pages.

No way to really block one's name. You are public unless you choose to drop completely out of society. Everything published is public information.

    How to REMOVE Your Info!

Scroll down to the bottom of the page. In small print you will see (in very small print, of course)::laugh:

Copyright © 2006-2011 Spokeo Inc. The People Search Engine.
About Blog Directory Privacy Terms Help Contact

Place your browser over the word Privacy and double-click. A new page with instructions on how to REMOVE your info and name will appear. Follow the directions. It is easy, and NO you don't have to join to remove your info.

I removed my wife and I with no problems. And I've gone back and checked several times over the past few weeks, and we are still not listed.

    Shalom,

    Pastor Paul :type:

Help my thinking here. Why would I NOT want to be listed so that others could find me? There is not enough info to have any "identity theft" happening . . and may allow xyz old friends from former church, college, etc be able to locate me.

This does not seem, on the surface, to be that "threatening". Appreciate some perspectives.

I promise that I can find out about almost anyone in a couple of clicks.

All it takes is access to a server with some level of functionality.

As a for instance, the site I co-founded, ucora.org, was attacked by a homosexual spammer. He filled virtually every thread with vile homosexual pictures and literature, then attempted to lock us down with a denial of service attack so that we could not fix the site.

It took less than an hour to know precisely the computer from which he sent the stuff, and to access a web-cam that his employer had in place that showed him actually typing in the filth. We emailed his boss and had the privilege of watching him be led away in handcuffs on their own web cam.

Anyone who thinks they can hid AND be on the web, is seriously mistaken. Wait... Anyone who thinks they can hide -- period -- are seriously mistaken. All records are public and anyone can find them it they know how and where to search. And, even without the web, anyone at all can simply go to the county courthouse and request public records on anyone else. That's the way it works.

In the bible, I believe it says Do not fear. I'm pretty sure this means, well, don't fear.

There's a difference between being fearful and, well, being prudent....

    pru·dent/ˈpro͞odnt/
Adjective: Acting with or showing care and thought for the future.

Jesus said not to worry about the future. More fear. Using the word prudent shows it's okay to fear. Fear someone will use your personal info to do what?

    Good Point!

That is a good point. I didn't write this post to cause a sense of fear! I just wanted my brothers and sisters on the board to be aware that another web site was posting personal info that they may want to block.

Unlike some of those who have responded, I don't need people contacting me. If I want to hear from someone from my past, present, or future, I will give them my permission and the personal info needed to get in touch!

If some of you were interested enough to take action and protect your privacy, great.

However, the fear folks are correct. All the fear in the world won't help you! You need to take action to protect your privacy, and if that involves being prudent, so be it!

    Shalom,

This seems to affect only (don't read too much into that word) the USA. I went to the site, typed my name in, and got 1600 results, but all in America.

The Lord also gave us common sense. It is not a matter of fear to do what, in fact; it is not a spiritual matter. The point is the information is no one else's business.

The Lord telling us not to fear has to do with an inward peace along with the joy, love, peace and grace He supplies. If one wants to take the fear thought out of context, they are free to stand on a train track with the train rushing towards them as they are saying "Fear not, fear not, ............." SPLAT.

    Duh

There are many companies out there who buy up old unpaid bills for little or nothing. Then, they begin the task of trying to collect and they don't care who pays it.

There is another individual in my area with the same name as I..., can you believe it..., (he's black - I'm white) who for a while wasn't paying his bills. As my name was in the phone book and his wasn't, I used to receive calls all the time trying to collect from him. I have been threatened by everyone from New York City Lawyers to loan companies in Florida. Had to remove my name from the phone book.

These folks prey on the elderly so don't hesitate to advise your elderly church members. Some will pay a bill thinking that perhaps they actually do owe it.

This website is going to open many doors otherwise closed to these predators. Otherwise, they would need to collect phone books from around the country.

If you don't believe in being prudent, why not post your social security number and bank account numbers for the world to see...after all, you have nothing to fear!

"Let us reason together" says the Lord.

Most of the information that site has for me and my wife is ridiculously incorrect.

Of course, our household is very careful regarding what information we give out. We don't do supermarket "loyalty" (actually data gathering) cards or fill our warranty cards (also data gathering devices) for products we purchase.

We also purposely skew some of the responses for data gathering non-legal documents when it is in our best interest to fill them out, but don't have the option of opting out of the data gathering questions.

It's just another "white pages", Brother RD.

I use whitepages.com all of the time because I can NEVER find my phone book and I don't keep an address book in my purse like I should.

This particular site you've shown us had me listed as a "married male"!!

  ......... ..........

Anyway, it did have a cool aerial overview of my house. And there are lots of places on the net where you can also find this information and directions to one's home and pictures of one's home. Haven't you seen the small planes swooping down over your house from time to time? They aren't crop dusting or looking for marijuana.

I'm of the opinion to remove if you want to and don't if you don't want to.

Just know that you will probably never remove all of your personal information that can be found on the internet.

Thanks for letting us know that there is another place where we can be "found".

    Anyone use Google "street view"?

I've used it to take a peek at the various churches that members here on the board share as a part of their public information. Can put things in perspective at times.

For instance, this will probably look familiar to our OP.

Here's a picture of me driving my old Toyota pickup on Google maps. (Well, you can't really see me in the driver's seat, but that's definitely me.)

I don't have the truck anymore, but it surprised me when I saw it. I noticed the Google vehicle go by, but I didn't think much about it until later, when I heard people talking about seeing themselves in their front yards.

    Seriously.
