There are certain phrases and lyrics to secular songs that really get under my skin. Hope you will mention some others if you can think of them.

I said a little prayer for her. What is a little prayer?
Lets have a little talk with Jesus. Why a little talk, you better talk as much as possible to Him
Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life. Not worthy of comment
Tune in to the Master's radio. Same as above.

Doesnt sound like Mercyme, Chris Tomlin, 10th Avenue North etc. to me. I rather like Contemp Christian music, if fact, it is just about all we have in our worship services.

When giving a testimony - "I got my tests results back today & everything looks good. God is faithful." Does that mean that if the test results had come back with a bad prognosis that God would therefore not be faithful? I do not doubt the sincerity of the individual & I know that most know that God is faithful no matter what & I'm not trying to nitpick, it's just a thought I've had.

I draw a distinction between worship music and Christian entertainment, although individual songs may fall in both categories.

Songs like Turn Your Radio On are nice little harmless metaphorical songs. I would never use it in a worship service, but might consider it for one of our Sunday Night singspirations.

I think the main consideration is the text. It should line up with scripture. Or at the very least not be contrary to scripture.

I was looking recently for a song for our men's quartet at church. It was fine for the most part, had a nice melody. But there was one line in it that created a problem for me.

"If anybody makes it, surely I will." Something just didn't sound right, so I decided not to propose the song to the other guys.

I'm not a real fan of CCM, and definitely not a fan of Christian rock--but that's subjective and personal. But whatever the genre, get the lyrics right.

Nor am I a fan of gospel songs which tell a story, but I make exceptions. Remember, it's just a personal preference, nothing really wrong with them.

Even so, there are some I like, such as "The Baptism of Jesse Taylor."

Among the local taverns they'll be a slack in business
'Cause Jesse's drinkin' came before the groceries and the rent
Among the local women they'll be a slack in cheatin'
'Cause Jesse won't be be steppin' out again.

They baptized Jesse Taylor in Cedar Creek last Sunday
Jesus gained a soul and Satan lost a good right arm
They all cried "Hallelujah" as Jesse's head went under
'Cause this time he went under for the Lord.

And frankly, there's nothing unscriptural there that I can find.

"God helps those who help themselves."

    Arrrrgggg!

    I can't help myself. That's why I need a Savior!

Most of the time, hymns that have bad theology will only have a phrase or so. In the secular world, some songs like "Drop Kick Me......" have such outrageous imagery in relation to the Savior, that if there was any positive message in the song, it is buried below the garbage of the way it was conveyed. Jesus kicking a football through a pair of goal posts?? How pathetic can one get?

Another word that has become very distracting to me during prayer is the word "just." It is repeated over and over and over again and adds nothing to the thoughts expressed. "Lord, we are just so thankful to be in Your presence. We just praise Your Holy Name." etc, etc. I guess if our pastor wanted to put me over the edge he could say, "As we close this service, all heads are bowed and eyes closed. In the moments before the closing prayer, just have a little talk with the Lord." A few minutes later, "Brother Smith, would you just have a little prayer in closing?"

Chris Tomlin - You are my King.

The song is great until you get to "in all I do, I honor you". Really? I honor God is "all" I do, even when I dishonor Him by sinning?!? I refuse to sing that portion when I get to it, or substitute the Newsboys "in what I do to honor you"

One song that has a bunch of la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la's...I can't remember the song, but that REALLY hits a nerve!

Another Chris Tomlin lyric from Indescribable "who has told every lightning bolt where it should go...". I understand the reference to God's sovereignty...but you cannot make the case God has directed each lightning bolt. Of course His permissive will is in play, but that doesn't mean He has declared where each bolt should hit.

It comes from the following verse:

1Co 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Temptations and trials are not the same thing. The Lord will be with us as we go through trials, but sometimes a trial is a growing experience, and there is not a way of escape like a temptation.

I just remembered a couple of phrases from the 80s commonly heard during sermons. Talking about the inerrancy of the Bible, it was always "The Bible is true from Genesis one one to Revelation none none." Or how about this during a sermon about salvation and hell. "If you die in your sins, you will go pell mell (should be Pall Mall) to hell."

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this one, I would be very rich. "Smoking will not send you to hell, but you smell like you have been there."

Yet the word translated as "temptation" in 1 Corinthians 10.13 is translated "trial(s)" in Luke 22.28, Acts 20.19, Galatians 4.14, James 1.2, 1 Peter 4.12 and Revelation 3.10. That is in the NKJV. In the KJV, it is "trials" in 1 Peter 4.12.

My Online Bible Greek Lexicon defines the Greek word like this:

    1) an experiment, attempt, trial, proving
1a) trial, proving: the trial made of you by my bodily condition, since condition served as to test the love of the Galatians toward Paul (#Ga 4:14)
1b) the trial of man’s fidelity, integrity, virtue, constancy
1b1) an enticement to sin, temptation, whether arising from the desires or from the outward circumstances
1b2) an internal temptation to sin
1b2a) of the temptation by which the devil sought to divert Jesus the Messiah from his divine errand
1b3) of the condition of things, or a mental state, by which we are enticed to sin, or to a lapse from the faith and holiness
1b4) adversity, affliction, trouble: sent by God and serving to test or prove one’s character, faith, holiness
1c) temptation (i.e. trial) of God by men
1c1) rebellion against God, by which his power and justice are, as it were, put to the proof and challenged to show themselves
