The one thing, more, than anything else, that I appreciate about fellowshipping at a conservative baptist church is this...

I have never...NEVER...heard a message preached in any baptist church that was just a bunch of "positive thinking" gobbledegoop like Osteen, or some kind of "quasi-mystical" nonsense like Hinn, or experienced any kind of dead liturgy like the catholic cult, etc etc etc.

Its always the scriptures, properly interpreted, and clearly articulated.

    As it should be.

    Praise the Lord!

Actually, I think the word, in it's most technical spelling is "gobbledegooK". But I digress.

    :wavey:

Anyways, like you, I do like that fact that I don't have to listen to the "motivational speaking" nor the "out right foolishness" (I think you were too kind with quasi-mystical ;)).

But I will say this, as much I appreciate the Baptist church and my own church specifically, I have heard my share of incorrectly interpreted scripture and unclearly articulated scripture. Not much and definitely not often, but I am recalling a half a dozen times or so over the past decades.

I like being a Baptist because I like being right on everything.

And, what AIC and Scarlett said, as well.

Aside from correct doctrine, I like the Priesthood of the Believer and autonomous local churches.

I can testify that except for End Times doctrine, closed communion, Landmarkism, a closet universalist and arminian, Tom is right about everything.

Your baptist social circle must not be very wide. I have heard some horrible preaching from baptist pastors that sounded like they had watched Osteen the night before and simply taken his notes.

    Yeah, I have, too.

But the best testimony I ever heard came from my Presbyterian elder brother-in-law. His job took him on the road for long periods of time. He told me that when he and his wife were traveling on Sunday, he always looked for a Baptist church, because he knew that he would likely hear the gospel preached there. He later became a Baptist, and a deacon. He was one of the finest students of scripture I ever knew.

Folks, when saturneptune and I swap barbs, please understand that we're having fun at each other's expense. Mike and I are fellow servants at the same church in Paducah.

The difference between him and me is that if I have anything snotty to say about him, I say it behind his back.

I just like being a Baptist because I feel it's where I belong, it just feels natural.

I like being a Baptist because:

    1. Once saved, always saved
    2. Baptists have the best pot-lucks and fried chicken

I have to agree with Shortandy. Too many topical sermons that are leaning toward the Osteen style...not that I have heard Osteen much.

I have heard enough about family dynamics, personality disorders, addictive behavior and what is behind all that to be credited with at least 3 hours of undergrad sociology. I would love to hear some good expository preaching. Just open the Bible and start teaching. We get that to some extent in our Sunday School class delivered by our cadre of lay-teachers, and I truly appreciate them and am blessed by them. I wish our Pastor would do more of it from the pulpit.

I know most Baptists churches preach the Word more directly than my current pastor. Most of the Baptist Churches that I have attended in m life focused on Biblical preaching, teaching and/or "soul-winning sermons". So I am not arguing the notion that Biblical preaching is a characteristic of Baptist Churches. But my wife and I happen to be at one where the Pastor has strayed toward a more topical sermon pattern that are sometimes only “seasoned” with sprinklings of scripture. I would love to see that trend reversed but I don’t feel I have the tenor here as a member to make such a suggestion.

Not to be crass but a lot of Baptists overeat to the point where it's so unhealthy. I don't think gluttony is a message that gets preached in many churches and it should be. As a country we are getting more and more overweight and now so many kids are overweight. It's sad. Yet everyday the drivethrus at MCD and Burger King are out of the parking lot.

Gluttony is not "eating unhealthy." In the ancient world, rich folks would eat until they were full, and then induce vomiting, so they could eat more.

Nothing sinful about McDonalds; nothing in the Bible that says the modern day concept of "eating healthy" is a requirement.

Yeah that whole thing about your body being a temple of God and not to harm it probably isn't important. I'm sorry eating at MCD every now and then may not be a sin but either their constantly to me seems like it's harming your body. Regardless of that I would hope more people as humans would have enough decency and be responsible enough to take care of their bodies. Obesity is a real issue in this country and I can't stand seeing overweight preachers that aren't even responsible enough to maintain a healthy weight.

    1. You're straying from the OP. This thread is about what we like as Baptists, not about what we don't like.
    2. There have been many sermons preached on gluttony, not only at my church but also on the BB.
    3. I'm glad you're so perfect. My dh is an excellent pastor, although yes, he's overweight, as am I. Sorry the sight of us is something you can't stand.
    4. If you want to discuss this further, start a new thread. I've got both barrels ready.

I never said I was perfect, but there's a lot of hypocrisy in church. That's all I'm saying. People look down on people that do meth, it doesn't say in the Bible not to do meth but based on the principles it gives us it's pretty apparent that's not a very responsible thing to do, same with healthy eating.

This thread is about what we like as Bapists. I happen to enjoy our pot-lucks and fellowship time, along with other things. No sin in that, and I never endorsed gluttony or overeating.

I'm still trying to get around your comment of not being able to STAND THE SIGHT of overweight preachers. I find that statement inflammatory and offensive.
