When Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon saying, "That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind".

I was watching him on TV in our family room.

Gary Seronik, astronomer-journalist (Sky and Telescope magazine) presents a short article about Neil Armstrong's first step at his personal website Apollo 11 on the Moon . Gary clocks Neil's first step at 10:56 p.m. EDT on July 20th, 1969.

For those interested in taking up the hobby of lunar observing, Gary presents several of his how-to articles in the section Viewing the Moon.

I enjoy observing the Moon in the night sky ever chance I get. Amateur astronomy is a great hobby for observing God's wonderful creation. Send me a PM if you want some suggestions on how to get started.

I don't remember. It must not have been important to me.

I was at school in Bendigo Victoria Australia. There was one television, and that was at the priests house. The entire school tried to jam into the lounge room.....it was not a big school!!! Then all the kids who lived near were told to go on home to see it if they had tvs.....we did!!! so me and my brothers walked home.

We thought it fabulous.....getting out of school!!!

The grainy images were amazing!!! The local paper had a BIG COLOUR SUPPLEMENT to keep, we had it for decades.

The time zone thing had me confused for years, because Armstrong actually did the big step thing on the 21st July in Australia!!! which of course was a Monday.

    Sydney, Australia...on R&R from Vietnam.

    The Australians were ecstatic!

I didn't even know they were in space and at the time, I couldn't have cared less.

In bed - it was 3.56AM here! I was listening to the event on radio. (We didn't have television in our student-type hostel in London).

My family went over to my aunt and uncle's house, and we all watched together. I was 11 years old, and remember it well. My dad is an amateur astronomer, so he was very excited to see it.

Sitting in the family room with my wife and children.

By the way, Neil Armstrong mis-spoke his famous line upon stepping on the moon.

He said, "that's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind."

He meant to say "That's one small step for A man...."
