On politics and revolution

No matter how this all plays out I am proud of my adopted country (Ireland).

This is how you hold a revolution. Fianna Fail, which has been the most powerful party all through Irish history, has been turned out. They had 78 members of the 166 member Dail (parliament). After Friday's election they are going to lose about 60 of those seats.

No political statement at all here, because any supposed 'change' may or not do any real good, but the Irish people have proved that the ballot box is the best place to exert your will.

 

No application to US politics intended.

I am not saying this was a good or bad things in terms of long term policy change. Not sure the new guys are any better than the old, but the Irish voters showed they had had enough.

US voters showed an indication of the same in 2010. Let's see if they complete the job in 2012.

 

The present party took voters for granted since they have always been the dominate party. The Irish voter proved at the ballot it is foolish to take voters for granted without violence or taking to the streets.

 

Its quite a detailed story - I'll work on condensing it and try to put it up tomorrow. This was huge - Fianna Fail had the greatest number of seats in every Dail since 1928. They were not always in government, because other parties would coalesce in order to get a majority. In this vote they were far back in third place, only a few seats ahead of Sinn Fein, which was the political branch of the IRA.
