Why do you believe in God?

I am not sure my answer would satisfy the skeptic, but I realized several years ago that I am unable to NOT believe in God. This was during a time of great trial when it would have been easiest for me (for my flesh) to deny God, abandon faith and just live like world. I couldn't do it. I could and did commit sin, but I couldn't make myself stop believing - I couldn't walk away. And that led to deeper repentance, a strengthened faith, and a renewed love for our Lord.

 

Even as a boy I could see the great complexity and order of the universe, and so rejected what I was taught in school that all things came to be by random chance.

The reason I believe in Jesus Christ is the scripture. I knew when I read the Bible that men did not write these words, for no man WOULD write these words. Man loves to believe himself good, but the scriptures reveal man as he truly is. I knew this, because the scriptures revealed myself to me, as I truly knew myself to be, a miserable sinner. When I read the scriptures, I knew it was TRUTH. And so I cast myself on Jesus as God told me to do.

 

There is no other God for us to believe in.

 

I would say that even as a young child I believed in God and that He was creator. I was given a little New Testament at the age of 6 that I loved even though I couldn't understand it. I have always believed the bible to be the word of God.
I was a God seeker from childhood, but was not raised in a Christian home or taught about God. I did hear His name taken in vain many times. I believe God took mercy on a little ignorant child.

Now that I am saved and have studied the bible for many years, I see how absolutely amazing it is that it even exists. People for thousands of years have tried to rid the world of it, but never succeeded. The fact that it was written over a period of 1600 years by 40 different authors from kings to fishermen, living on different continents, containing only one theme, the Lord Jesus Christ, can only be described as miraculous.
All this lends validity to the bible's authors and I believe their testimony.

Add to that..one day I prayed for God's forgiveness and told Him all I wanted was Him and my life has never been the same. I have a love for scripture that could only be given by God. I does not come from myself. Even through all the ups and downs, the bad churches, bad doctrines and confusion, I cannot let go of Him. I'm either crazy or God really does exist and really does love me. I think it's the latter.

 

Excellent, Winman. I was taught to believe in God as a child, but when I grew older, I had to examine the evidence. That included he order and complexity of the universe, just as you examined.

I understand that without faith, it's impossible to please God. But I also believe that there is enough evidence that one can use his intellect to learn a lot about God, and apply reason to arrive at truth. Believers don't have to park their minds at the door.
