Ever wonder where that area code is calling from?

This link gives all the 4-1-1

    Bonus Question:

What was the basis as to how area codes orginally were assigned?

Yes, I would like to know that. Also, how were they changed? My area code used to be 203, now it is 860, how did they determine the new number?

Take the numbers in the area code ie New York City was 212 and add them up - 2 +1 +2 = 5 (lowest # possible). The largest cities got the lowest numbers . Los Angles was 213 (6)

Smaller cities had higher numbers. Alaska is 907 (26) {0 counts as 10 because it was next to 9 and thus longer to dial)Rochester, NY was 716 (14). The reason being the bigger cities would have more people calling them, thus easier to dial with "low numbers"

Remember this was all with the old dial phones. Now it push buttons that is no longer relevant.

How they select an AC now, I do not know.
